So when you get your new bike what do you guys do first?

most of the time, the bike gets taken apart 100% and about 2x the bike's original cost is spent on "conversion parts", the parts arrive, a bunch of mock up pics are posted, then the motivation is lost, or half the bike's pieces can no longer be found, then the project dies and is eventually parted out here or sold on craigslist

seriously, get a bike, get it running, enjoy it, don't take it apart before you ever get it on the road

To take a stab at it:
1. Not every tank can work on every frame, but some swaps are easier than others. Much measuring is required, and welding/cutting/beating may also depending...

Is there any easy way to work out if the tank swap would be fairly simple?

That's where the measuring comes in. Get dimensions of your frame and mounting options. How wide does the tunnel need to be? How long is the stock tank nose to tail? Then ask someone that has one of the tanks you are considering to take some measurements and see how close the 2 are.

Things to think about: where is the petcock on the non stock tank? It may be in a bad place for you in the new arrangement.
Clearance with your fork legs could be an issue, and the tunnel is a likely sticking point.
Minor adjustments can be made with a hammer and dolly if needed.
Cutting and welding of tanks is not generally novice work, and pro built tanks are awesome but expensive!
