The Whack Shack (formerly known as The Aviary)

Re: The Aviary?

Sex swing. I mean what is an aviary without a swing?

That is all. Oh and this.

Re: The Aviary?

Whatcha doing for the electrical? Adding a new service? Coming off of your breaker panel for your house? We did a new 2000 amp service at Motiva by the airport(kenner) and getting the permit to do so was a pain!

Re: The Aviary?

Yeah i looked into a new service drop for my shop when I built it and it was to big of a pain in the butt to do it that way. Ended up running underground service connected to the main panel via a sub panel in the shop. I already had 200a service at the house, so i ran a dedicated 150a breaker to a disconnect, then to the shop panel. Done and done. Got lucky and scored a length of triplex from the tornado damage here to wire my shop up. Saved a ton of money. Word of advice....a trencher is worth the rental fee!

Re: The Aviary?

As far as permits go... [monotone voice]I will not be putting electricity in the shop[/monotone] ;)

I'm basically going to do the same as Kiley did. Run off the house with a panel in the shop. And I'm lucky enough that rental on a trencher costs me a six pack of beer. My bro sells Bobcat equipment :D :p
And also lucky for me, 3 outta 4 of my bro-in-laws are electricians, as is Father-in-law (retired), and neighbor buddy does commercial high tension wire work. I should be able to get out fairly cheap on hardware and install help. :)

Re: The Aviary?

Absolutely! Sounds legit man. You can use overhead triplex for your service, you just have to bury it inside of conduit. I used the gray PVC type as its flexible. But that stuff is rated for overhead service and can carry a lot of juice. Plus it is MUCH cheaper than copper core wire since it is aluminum. May even be able to "scavenge" some if you're lucky. Here everything is ran with triplex overhead. With your shop, 100A service will be more than enough, and the 100A breakers are easy to come by at Lowes or HD. I think my main panel is a Siemens. The shop panel is GE because it was cheapest and came as an "installer's kit" with an included main breaker and a pile of good ol' 20A.

Re: The Aviary?

Man... Not sure how I missed the finished pics. Amazing space you've created bud. Love it.

Re: The Aviary?

Thanks Mike, coming from you, that means a lot ;)

Wait... you are sober, right? ;D :p

Re: The Aviary?

Cool man. They should be able to point you in the right direction. I just left two circuits in my panel board for my shed. I have a 200a service as do most homes nowadays so it's not a problem to run compressor and decent sized motor driven tools. I got a permit for mine this year and in the long run it just cost me more money everywhere. I drafted the plans but had to get an architect to stamp them. The dude made me put footers where I didn't need them which added up to 40yds of concrete plus steel. Sucks. Avoid permits like the plague.

Re: The Aviary?

Makes me glad we don't have out building code here. As long as it isn't attached to the house they don't care.

Re: The Aviary?

I hear ya. I'm out in the country but they still have new homes going up in the neighborhood so the parish inspectors cruise around a lot and keep an eye out for people breaking the rules while they are going to ther job sites.

Re: The Aviary?

Guffaw?! That sounds painful  :p

It's actually a maniacal laugh reminiscent of Renfield from the early Dracula movies.
But I didn't want people to think I was, uh... weird or anything ;)

(Huhee Huhee Huhee Huhee... )

And I'm considering a name change, since Aviary was all I could come up with at the time.
Wood Shed is currently topping the list.
Any suggestions?

Re: The Aviary?

If it doesn't have something to do with "shack" in the title I'll be disappointed.

Kiley, how 'bout Whack Shack?
It has a Hammer connotation: "Whack your thumb with a..."
It has a That's Just Silly connotation: "Crack is..."
It has an Excitement connotation: This Shit Is So Cool I Think I Need To..."

Of course I'm PUI right now, so I may feel different about it in the AM ;)

Got the "Thumbs Up" from the owner of the Garage Mahal...

Whack Shack it is ;)
