Thinking about powdercoating my tank

MN_TX650

Been Around the Block
Found a guy who could do a chrome powder with clearcoat...says it will look very much like polished aluminum. Curious if anyone has done this before?

never seen the chrome powder but i have seen the clear over bare metal and it looks sick! the clear over anything matte finish or flat gives it a shiny look and it's really durable. if you get this done i'd love to see it

I am probably going to end up going this route, but thought I would see if anyone else had tried it yet first.

I have a fender that was powdercoated chrome and it came out nice but you can definitely tell that it isnt bare metal or aluminum. it has a painted look

If you look at a lot of late model BMW (car) wheels you'll find that the chrome alloys are actually powdercoated.
It's a good look and would be badass on a tank.....kinda gives me an idea.....

and you know this MANNNNNN!!!!
dude first off... 100000X's more cool colors than lame ass chrome
here are a few i did last night
this is silver explosion with dorment grape over it

this is the chrome he is talking about with a clear on it (the clear has to be done, to protect the metalic in the paint but it does dull it down a bit)

I only use pattented chrome from powder by the pound... and this is why:

to do it RIGHT.... i would POLISH the whole tank... then have him clear it in 150% gloss glass clear... would cost you next to nothing to have done cause all the prep work is done... last polished tank i cleared i did for 20 bucks... all i had to do what hot flock it and cure it... took me about an hour...

Listen to the man he knows what he's talking about! ;D

I like the bare metal idea though, just use some clear and your set!

My next project will have some more wild colors in it. I really want this tank to look like polished aluminum...in true manx style. But with out the cost! LOL. I've got some spots that will need to be fixed up before powder, so I don't know that the polished look with clear will work out as nicely. Hoping to get the tank stripped and prepped this weekend and shipped out next week. Those parts done with chrome powder are the exact look I am going for. Is your oven big enough to fit an XS750 tank? ;D

ooh ya plenty big enought! i can fit frames in my oven man....
what do you mean fixed up? you can not use bondo to fix something that is going to be powder coated, it will not handle the heat! i use JB weld on smaller stuff and Quik-Steel on the larger parts that need work... bondo will drip, outgass, and really piss off a powder coater for having that crap on the bottom of his oven :)!
plus to do a tank right you need to media blast it first then fix the body work with quick steel, sand that down, rub it down and shoot it with a good primer first... that will REALLY smooth it out... then lay the chrome and clear would look AWESOME! let me know what your looking to do man i can fit that not problem!
