This seat? What's wrong?

Born to lose, destined to fail.
Just found this seat on ebay. Holding the "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" adage at only $55 what is WRONG with this?

It's for my 72 cl350.

Looks OK and good feedback from people who have bought the seats. For what looks to be a 'mass produced' seat $55 is a decent price. One made lovingly by hand will run 2x that - I'm guessing this is slapped together with a mold as quickly as possible to sell for $55 and still make a profit.

But good feedback from lots of buyers so there you go.

I read the positive feedback. With Roccity and DCC seats running more than twice this I wanted to make sure I wasn't being blinded by the price and not thinking before I threw money away.

I think it might suffice for my first seat, given my lack of mechanical apptitude. At least if I muck it up I didn't lose too much.

not to knock the guy, I have no problem with competition, he says he's buying in bulk to save money on materials, but I know what they cost even at quantity and the only thing I could think could work at that price is that the seat is using less material, so I'd ask him how thick it is, and also how many layers of laminate (actual glass strand and resin) are used... for all I know, he could be getting a super deal somewhere, but my guess would be the seat is probably pretty thin and possibly not that sturdy... but ask him and find out, it could wind up being an awesome deal

but ask him and find out, it could wind up being an awesome deal

I didn't ask, I just clicked the "buy" button. Patience isn't one of my higher attributes. I am a great supporter of the American economy because I buy shit without thinking about it. /sarcasm Fox News says that makes me a patriot! /sarcasm

;D

You get what you pay for. If it is a cheaper version with less material then use the money you saved an reinforce it. If its good, bargain!

I have no idea how you'd build a quality seat and sell it for $55.00. Either you build down to a low quality level, pay whoever is doing the layup for you peanuts or don't pay any taxes and run a scam so you end up hosing all law abiding citizens - or all of the aforementioned. I do none of those.
My Bates TT seat looks quite similar but perhaps a tad smaller and like Tim says, about twice the price - our list this year is $109.95. But then again, it's built with care from a very good mould, using excellent quality industrial grade reinforcements and resins by someone who cares about their products and I sure as hell wouldn't sell anything to a customer that I wouldn't be pleased to put on my own bike.

I will definately start a build thread once I get some parts in and let you guys know how the seat goes.

Considering I have the mechanical ability of a blindfolded grizzly bear I figure if I'm gonna bust up a seat, it may as well be a cheap one. After I learn what I'm doing I can buy a nice one.

The part description says it's made with "a layer". I'm inferring that means one layer?

I have this seat, I just got it in the mail last week, it is accually the second one I bought from him, the first one I bought was the one for the cb350 with the mount brackets, when that one came, it was only 22 inches long, meaning to fit it you would have to cut off the back of the frame behind the shocks, I didn't want to do that, so I ordered the $55 one as it is 26.5" long or so, I am gonna use the brackets from the other one to fit it to the bike, the brackets seem good quality and fit the frame perfect, I haven't mounted the seat yet, just test fitted the bracket in the front and lined up the rear one to the cross plate under the seat. I am new to all this as I just got my bike a month ago, but the seats feel like good quality to me, I am gonna sell the shorter one back on ebay, or to a friend or something when ever I get around to it.

I can't wait to get this fitted to the bike, then gonna paint it and my fairing to match the tank on the bike!!!

I just noticed that was my first post. so about me, I am from west fargo nd, I am 35, and my bike is a 71 cb350. My plan for it is just stock engine wise until it needs rebuilt, I changed air cleaners, I put drag bars on it instead of clubmans of clip ons as I didn't want to be uncomfortable, I put the fairing on it, and am gonna put the cafe seat on, I have bar end mirrors to add, and gonna put a different tail light on when I get the other seat on, and gonna put the license plate on the chain guard, that is about it for now, the air cleaners aren't in the pic, but they are k and n clones, the bike runs fine with the new air cleaners, and they clear the battery by about 1/4"

Thanks for all the photos and the introduction. Make sure you post in the member intro thread if you haven't already done so.

Welcome!

hi, i also got the seat from him, his ebay is J-Rod10 i believe, he is a really cool guy, i bought and he ship it fast, and im really pleased with the product its really solid and well built and it fitted my CL350 frame really good, still waiting on the tank to make adjustments

Mine came in today. Sadly I'm so busy the next two weeks I have NO idea when I'll be able to work on it. I'm leaving the current seat on and taking my bike to my vacation house in UT for a few days. Escape this heat!

just read the listing again, figured it out... he's using a layer of bulker as the laminate material, not cloth or mat, so it's basically gelcoat and spacer/filler material used as the structural material... cheap, not strong though, not really fiberglass either...

I was wrong. It still didn't come.

If I ever get this thing in I'll ride it till it's time for the winter overhaul and change to a quality seat then.

damn slow feabay
