Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 21 - found my Lucas headlight!

BTW - I'm not 100% what the question is about fitting it to the 450? It should just bolt into place where the current bucket goes. Might be different bolt sizes on the ears, but nothing beyond that.

well it's a7 inch bucket, the ear bolts i can track down, it's the inner rim parts i can't figure out, paul jones the guy putting my 450 together, he epoxy his bulb inside the lucas rim and it works , he's got a 450 light , i don't want to epoxy my bulb on like his , i think i got to show you in person,

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 21 - found my Lucas headlight!

You should just get the proper 12v Lucas style bulb to match the bucket/rim and then just connect the wiring to it. Will be a lot easier. Don't epoxy a bulb into the ring.

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 21 - found my Lucas headlight!

Well, my spokes finally arrived today :) I'm taking the spokes, rims, hubs, tires & tubes to Mark tomorrow afternoon for him to do the lacing/truing/tire install/balancing. Should have them back hopefully by the weekend :)

YAY! Will post pics when I get the completed wheels. Gonna look incredible, trust me.

Sweet man. How much is it costing you to have the wheels laced/trued/installed and balanced? I've got mine laced myself, but i'm curious as to all the cost.

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 23 - spokes here - wheels going in for assembly!

Lacing/truing is $50 per wheel. Tire installation/balancing should be another $20 per wheel. I figured even if I did the lacing myself, I'd want a pro to do the final truing etc. so I decided to spend the money.

Should have everything back in the next 2-3 days :D

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 23 - spokes here - wheels going in for assembly!

that seems a lot more reasonable than I would've thought.....I really cannot wait to see your bike as it comes together......It's exactly the way I would've done mine if I didn't have 2 kids in private school!!!

I'll PM you both the guys' info. I wouldn't have Mark (the wheel guy) install my tires again though. He did a great job, but I think a shop with a proper tire mounting tool, high power air compressor (to pop the beads into place) and a good selection of balancing weights would be better. Snow City Yamaha was going to charge me $40 to install/balance both tires, and I'm paying the same to Mark.

But with Mark, I do know I'm getting great attention to detail - more than I'd expect a big shop to provide.

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 26 - TA DAA! Rear Wheel Porn :)

WOW!!!! My pants are tenting..........

Me likey those tires too. I'll have to get me a set for the 400. Can't wait to see the front wheel, and then both of them on the bike!

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 26 - TA DAA! Rear Wheel Porn :)

The front is going to be SICK. 18" rim with a 10" hub. I may have to drag my boots to help slow down, but it will look awesome. Actually a TLS drum will probably be about as good as a single front disc for the most part anyhow. Won't be doing a lot of riding in the rain on this one.

It's like Christmas eve for me - front should be good to go tomorrow.

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 26 - TA DAA! Rear Wheel Porn :)

You know that he'll be in that garage ALL day... ;D

Wonder if it's be a rolling chassis... any one want to start a pool? ;)

I'm in for "close but a spacer will be holding it up".

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 26 - TA DAA! Rear Wheel Porn :)

Guaranteed it will be spacers missing - I can't find one of the rear wheel spacers, and I know I'll need custom ones for up front.

Haven't heard from the wheel guy yet - going to call him soon.

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 26 - TA DAA! Rear Wheel Porn :)

I'm really living vicariously through tintin and can't wait to see this bike as a roller......no pressure though

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 28 - Full Frontal!

Got the front wheel today. I didn't have Mark put the front tire on as he didn't have new spoke weights for it anyhow, and I was in a rush to pick it up today. Will take it into Snow City for tire install/balancing tomorrow.

Looks awesome!

I don't even know what else to say.....I'm tearing up and getting all weepy

Re: My XS650 project - update Oct 28 - Full Frontal!

It's pretty cool - the Buchanan stainless spokes each have a 'B' cast into the hub-end so there's no disputing what kind of spokes are in there.

It's getting there - slowly and expensively, but surely. Should have rubber on and balanced tomorrow, although they may need to order spoke weights. I don't want adhesive weights stuck to the rims.

Need to swap out the wheel bearings, and take the entire front end in to have spacers made up to centre the wheel (not designed to go into the forks I'm using) and have a tab welded to the fork to mate with the brake plate.

Then I have to decide if I'm polishing the fork tubes or powder coating them black. The entire front end from the triple trees on down is all polished alloy, chrome etc. So it might be nice to have black fork tubes to offset all the silver. We'll see. I do like the polished alloy a lot.
