Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: Tim's XS project - April 17 2010 - 4LS front hub :)

Man Tim, you made out like a bandit dude!

And yes on the pad break in. I would also do just what you said about sanding the inner drum liner for deglazing. Give it about a week of riding and you'll definitely feel a difference!

Beautiful work my friend!

Re: Tim's XS project - April 17 2010 - 4LS front hub :)

Rode it to work this morning and the brake is feeling WAY better now than it did going up and down my lane. 30 miles of highway riding and stop/go traffic will break in the brake I guess ;)

Major milestone too - now that I have a working speedo again, and for the first time out and about, I was able to measure my speed with some semblance of accuracy. Granted, my 18" wheel is rotating more per mile than the stock 19" wheel would have, but my tire is also a bit taller than stock too (I think) so it's close enough.

The bike can DO THE TON baby! Wooooohooo! Hit an indicated 100 on the 401, just east of the DVP in the collector lanes (for those of you who know the area). I'll turn my GPS logger on for the ride home to see just how fast I'm reallly going.

Felt really nice and strong at 100. Like it had plenty to go. But with no tach, I didn't want to push my luck and the engine only has 150 miles on it or so.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 17 2010 - 4LS front hub :)

Stoked to hear your bike can do the ton.
So did you end up running breathers on the upper vent pipes or did you run the stock hoses? I still can't made my mind up on mine. I hear it shouldn't spill oil thru there if you have the right amount of oil and it's not over filled.

When the sun comes out, take more photos, I love eye candy. :)

Re: Tim's XS project - April 17 2010 - 4LS front hub :)

I'm still running without hoses on the breather. I have the hose, but haven't sorted out where to route it or put filters. I have filters, but the inlet on the filter is much smaller than the hose ID.

No oil or smoke coming out of my breather. I'm running about 1/3 of the way above the min line on the dipstick before the max line.

At some point I'll probably route the hoses to under my tank or somewhere that I can discretely locate a PCV valve. They sell them at MikesXS and claim that the small vacuum in the crankcase that is generated provides some performance gain and less chance of oil leaking due to pressure in the crankcase. Maybe snake-oil, but I do want something on the breather at some point.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 17 2010 - 4LS front hub :)

Oh, and my brakes work AWESOME! On par with my BMW's front disc I'd say.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

Had a small issue to sort out over the last few days - leak in the fuel tank. Nothing major, and not a stress crack. Up on one of the mounts welded into the tunnel for the XS650 frame cups, which I'm not using. Little Permatex tank repair epoxy seems to have sorted it out.

Now I have a bit of a leaky left carb. I think it was stuck floats, as opening it up today at the gas station (on my way to the Forks) and putting it back together seems to have sorted out the problem. Will double check float heights but things are under control again.

Bike ran like a charm up to the Forks and back today. Fun ride, although my bike was a bit out of place among the newer bikes up there today.

OMG IT'S DONE!!! And looks SICK AS HELL man! Love it!

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

Heh - never done though are they. Putting 2 brand new Mikuni's on it today. I somehow broke the casting in one of them holding the pin for the float paddle or whatever that thing is called.

Can't buy the carb body on its own, so I figured I'd buy 2 new carbs, a matching left and right pair (they make them!) so my idle screws will both be on the outside, and I'll sell the one good one I have left or keep it for another project. Although I think a 34mm may be too small for my SR500.

Anyhow - carbs just arrived. Some 'work' to do now and then out to the garage to make the bike run again.

It's a true story. I've just added a power brake relief valve, about 5 bux US at a parts store, and it does actually smooth out the performance at speed. A local bike guru runs them on all his bike, and he's got an xs650. A good idea is to make sure you know which end the flow is coming from by blowing through both ends. Air goes one way through those valves. Don't ask why I needed to know that. heh heh.

I got rid of my leaky breather filter and went with the relief valve.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

Yeah - first thing I want to do is sort out my breather hardware on the engine. My engine has an aluminum box with 2 spigots on it. I've seen (I think) some XS650's with a single spigot, which would make things easier and neater. 1 hose vs. 2.

Very true! I am always tinkering with my 73. The older girls need a little more TLC than the young ones. that and I always seem to find new/different parts to stick on her :D

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

Hey Tim, how are you supporting your muffler? is it being held just by the header studs and bolts? No support towards the rear?

I can't see any other brackets.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

Looks like a tab right off the foot peg boss....

Re: Tim's XS project - April 21 2010 - front brakes are nice

It's all very stealthy ;) - just angled brackets from MikesXS (just strips of steel, but nicely painted black with holes drilled, pre-bent etc.)

Hanging from the footpeg bolts.

Re: Tim's XS project - April 26 2010 - broke a carb - so 2 new carbs for Tim :)

So I got my 2 new carbs hand delivered to my front door by Tony (who was making a trip up to Winners Circle this morning) and an hour or so later I had swapped in all the jets etc. and the bike was up and running again.

Love love love Mikuni VM carbs. Dead simple. If I can jet, bench sync, install and fine tune 2 carbs on an XS650 in an hour, they must be simple.

Took the bike out this evening and it's running like a champ. Bit of fine tuning to do.

Then in a couple weeks after the engine is more broken in, I'm taking it to be dyno'd. Found a local shop that will run it for $60 and give me a report showing all the flat spots, HP, torque etc. etc.

Then I can play with the carbs a bit more to eliminate some dead spots in the throttle. But it's running nice, idling, doesn't race, doesn't stall, will do 100+ mph... so I'm not going to mess around too much.

Aren't you the lucky one...

Glad to see you have your toy all buttoned up and ready to go.

Very well concealed Tim. Looks great. Mikuni VM's huh? MMMMMM mmmm MMMMM
Now, if you could get together with someone to throw a video like the ones Troy makes, that would awsome....

Good lord Tim! I just remembered you making a comment about dragging a pipe.....even with a bit of sag, that's some lean angle....
