Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Joe - I'd be honored to have any of the pics shown on your site - I can send you full size ones in a couple weeks but feel free to snag them from the post above.

Thanks for the compliments guys - it's a work in progress to be sure. Signal lights are being replaced with 'invisible' ones soon.

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Nice Tim... love the new headers, Looks very british.

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Very nice! Can't wait to hear it....where's that video?

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Love this bike, super clean.

Great job Tim.

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Just put a Ferodo racing clutch kit in it with the XS Performance springs from MikesXS. Test ride tomorrow but right off the bat no more clutch drag and easier to find neutral etc. Very nice :)

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

I like it! Love the front brake. Im doing a similar build with a cb550. I wonder what drum i could fit on there....

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

I did manage to see your tires are avon road riders and the front is a 100/90-18, but I can not find what size 18" rear you used. whatever width it is, could you/would you have gone larger. Yours are great looking and I love avons, and plan to use them on my similar setup.
thanks again Tim..

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Wow Tim! This is the first time I saw this post. Can't believe I missed it. The bike looks incredible. Absolutely love all the chrome and shinyness! Great work.

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

My rear is a 110. It's plenty fat enough for me, especially on this bike. A 120 would fit too, but wouldn't really look much different.

I got the Feroodo clutch kit on eBay for $45 (still available) but the rest of the parts all add up and it ends up being $200 or so to redo the whole thing.

It runs awesome - riding the snot out of it whenever I can. Anything over 55mph gets really buzzy and annoying after 10 minutes. Not a highway bike. I've been focussing my time/effort/$$$ on my 1975 R75 getting it ready for an October run down to Leeds Alabama for the Barber vintage festival.

It's getting:

Boyer ignition
Thunderchild diode board
Thunderchild regulator
Mikuni VM32 carbs

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

I hear ya, just put a new Dunlop front, I believe one step down on the aspect ratio. Had to ride it from schenectady NY (Upstate) to Boston two weeks ago. Mywrists and ass are still recovering :-X

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Awesome bike, going for something similar myself.

A few suggestions to make it more britlike, aircleaners, if you could get some pancake aircleaners. Also a small rear mudguard just to protect the airfilters from getting alot of grit thrown on them would propably not be a bad thing :) A chainguard comes in handy too. Some day if you're not wearing black leathers and using the bike, you will ruin your clothes. Done that.

The instruments, are they plug and play?

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

I've actually worked on fitting a front mudguard (fender for our NA friends ;)) and have alloy yokes, replicas of those used on most Manx's etc. But it became a real pain in the arse and I put them back on the shelf. Fitting it and keeping the fork brace proved challenging, and I'll take handling over the fender.

While the Brit bikes are clearly my inspiration, I don't pretend it's not Japanese, and a mid-1970's bike. So having the more aggressive modern filters is fine with me, and I do like how they look. Bolting heavy chrome pancake filters than flow less air and weigh more seems counter-productive. I haven't had any problem with my chain - it's an X ring chain and doesn't fling oil all over me. But a simple chain guard may end up on the bike at some point.

Right now I'm focusing on my SR500 project, and need to do some maintenance work on my BMW R75/6 (wheel bearings). And the XS needs a little electrical love as I've removed the signal lights and replace them with a headlight that has integrated LED indicators and a brake light with the same. So before spring I need to sort that out as it's my only rideable bike at the moment.

Re: Tim's XS project - June 10 2010 - new headers and some pics

Oh and yep - the clocks are compatible with my Suzuki 4LS front hub's speedo gearing and cable, as well as the XS's tach gearing (1:5 I think - very common on most Japanese models).

Re: Tim's XS project - done but these things are never done, are they :)

Great bike Tim, I've been admiring quite a bit in Cycle Canada for little inspirations for my bike.

Re: Tim's XS project - done but these things are never done, are they :)

yeah, too bad they butchered my last name and called it a bobber or something. cafe racer was never even mentioned in the article.

Re: Tim's XS project - done but these things are never done, are they :)

Yeah, Bobber or Café hopper?
I still keep it open next to the throne for ideas and inspiration ;)

Re: Tim's XS project - done but these things are never done, are they :)

Will be posting up some pics in the next day or so showing my invisible turn signal mod :)

If they're invisible anyway, why not just leave em away?
