Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Going to be riding it more in the next few days, so I'll decide if I want to wimp out and put the electric back on. Easy enough to do - thankfully I did put the crossover shaft/gears in the engine just in case. Left all the other bits off so the clutch will have to come back off so I can put some of the left over gears in there for the starter motor to work but no big deal.

Really just forces me to always be wearing proper foot gear, so that's a good thing. It's only when stalling it at a light that it's a PITA to kick, but by then it's warmed up and kicks over/fires up easily enough. With the stock motor I actually mastered a rolling kick start if it stalled on me, but this engine needs more 'oomph' to turn over.

Can't wait to dyno it. Not sure I'll get anywhere near 150 on the salt given the distance limits, elevation, terrain and my courage red-line.

Also noticed I can slip the clutch now. Will have to do some work on that. Already have a Ferodo racing clutch in it but stock springs.

As hoof's father said about the salt, and I am paraphrasing here:

"It isn't the fall that hurts you, it's what you hit after the fall." He pauses while looking around the wide open salt flats. "I think you'll be just fine."

I saw a slick build where someone welded the XS combustion chambers into a bathtub shape, and used flat top pistons like an old VW engine. I'm obsessed with this idea!

That would be Jack's experimental head for 'long rod' 707cc motor ;)

Jack and I have been doing all sorts of fun stuff with XS motors for quite a while, although last few years I've been neglecting XS to play with CB360's

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

I'm pretty sure 1st gen R1 clutch plates will fit, but I don't know about springs. I might score some to try out.

Crazypj: I've got a cb350 that I've been trying to find time to dig into. I would like to machine a billet block and shoot for a 1.6:1 bore to stroke ratio. I think that works out to a 445cc motor. I also need to decide what frame I want to put it in!

I made longer titanium rods for my XS with wrist pins closer to the piston rings.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Haven't heard that about R1 plates before. I'm running Ferodo Racing friction plates already. Might have been my clutch not quite adjusted properly. Looking at putting heavier springs in, at least for the Bonneville run.

Looking at number plates now, and just finalizing details for my Vanson leathers (which while incredibly expensive will last me as long as they fit me).

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Finally, long after getting it from Joe at DWMS, I installed my breather can tonight.

I modified it to take larger brass fittings to mate with the single 1/2" ID breather hose coming from my XS engine. I used one of the fairly rare single breather engine fittings, modified by enlarging the holes etc. as per some online suggestions. Much cleaner than having the 2 hoses on most year engines.

Used some 40mm stainless P clamps sourced from England to mount to the underside of my seat. I may move it - this was an opportune location due to holes being readily available in the right spots (my cooling holes for the electrical components). Might move it out to the side, but for the moment it's more or less centered. Echoes the air filters nicely I think.

Just waiting on a UNI UP-103 breather filter for the other end. The UNI filter is almost exactly the same diameter as the billet catch can and is red/black so it will all look nice on the bike ;)

Love it. That looks great. Thanks for doing bike work on here, gives me my fix while I am swamped with shop construction!

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Nice and clean looking, no more fine misty oil coming out now!

Let's get this thread to 100 pages.

Very nice man.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Brother I am so honored to see the breather on your bike, I love the way you mounted it and I hope it will bring you some extra luck on the salt!

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Will get some better pics soon - just waiting on the breather filter for the larger fitting. UNI UP-103 to be specific. It's a nice pairing as the diameter of the filter is pretty much the same as the canister so it will fit perfectly under the seat.

Sadly once I put on the mandatory number plates you won't be able to see it much, but they'll only be on for a few miles ;)

Man, that thing looks of the business!
yessir big fans on that sell nurse at really do you set the motor of panda eyes
(I left this because it's funny but autocorrect is a bitch)
Should read: those big dinner cylinders really do add a sense of muscularity missing from the stock motor. Not to mention the apparent performance increase. Can't wait for your synod run....and to hear the brute on something other than this shitty phone speaker. On this it sounds like a plastic bucket filled with #5 roadbed rocks and one gerbil that wandered in at an inoportune moment(sound on this phone really does suck)

I did wonder about corner clearance with your current pipes. I have a pair of old 60's cocktail shakers with a kick up built in. They're hammered but fresh ones or something similar would look a treat on your scoot and would be the very last thing to touch down....

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Definitely do have clearance issues with the pipes. Was grinding them at Deals Gap. Resulted in a nice photo but need to sort them out. The headers did have a kickup on them but I cut them shorter. Haven't quite sorted where I would hang the silencers from if they were further back and angled up.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

I have a 30° upsweep on my pipes and I fabbed my own hangars. I'm not familiar with the XS too much, but something similar may work for you? I drilled into the frame to run a bolt through it. Medium-term plans are to drill the hole out larger, and then run a plug through it and weld it as I think my solution may have created some stress risers that will need to be dealt with.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

No, this is what I want but I think the XS engine is too wide for them.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

BTW - I've got one of these fairings sitting around - picked it up at a swap meet years back. Think it would make me go faster? :D Seriously, aerodynamic advantage to this? Given they're on the race bikes surely there must be? Or just a place to hang a number?

Thinking about Bonneville.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

I have a little wind screen i use on the 450 for long trips or cold weather, it wouldn't be much bigger than that and with it on I can cruise at 90MPH with it off lucky to cruise at 75 at the same engine speed, I would say it would help some.

Cheers,

Maritime

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

It looks it would likely help a bit, especially if your head is tucked in.
