Title Help Needed

Due to my own foolishness I have a nice 76 CB400F without a title. The details were suppossed to be worked out to provide the title shortly after the purchase. Although the purchase price was based on a titled bike it didn't happen. What they say about a fool and his money.....

FL DMV has said the frame is essentially useless without a bill of sale. They have also said there is no way to run the VIN for previous Owners. That seems unlikely but these DMV types aren't exactly models of customer service. The seller's contact info has changed and now I am at a loss what to do next. Any suggestions? Any help for this fool's problem?

Write yourself a bill of sale and register it in Vermont then take the registration to your fl DMV and get a title.

Better yet you can get online and print out a Official looking bill of Sales and have someone else like a buddy or dad sign it then follow sonicjk Advice !

Like the others said there is no legit way to do it so give the bike to a friend and he can sell it back to you. Make sure to run the plate and VIN before you do this in case it comes back stolen.

Some States require a bill of sale that is specific to your state and local bmv... But yes, if its already a done deal, its easiest to have your friend, wife, brother, etc., sign the paperwork saying they sold it to you... Easy .

Here in Oklahoma there is a lien process that pretty much lets you put a mechanics or storage lien on a bike that if after a certain time the debt is not paid the lein holder can then apply for a new title, I've done it twice and will be doing it again. It is COMPLETLY legal, takes some time and some money but in the end the -------- is mine.

Your state may have some similar process.

Thanks evrybody for all the quick replies. And thanks for not berating me for not looking in the "legal" area. I'll take a shot at the bill of sale suggestions and see how it pans out.

Read my thread. You'll probably need a police affidavit also... I've done it a lot in Indiana.. No one likes to go to the bmv, the more paperwork you have the better... What's the worst they'll say? "Oh, you have too much paperwork, we can't give you a title". No, but they can say that you do not have enough paperwork and make you get more documents and go back. Then you'll have 2 trips and more time wasted... In would get as much proper paperwork as you can then make one trip... Good luck!!

You could always ask Dave at legendary motorcycles and tell him I sent you.. Super nice guy, he's titled untitled bikes in Florida before so he knows how and he probably won't have a problem helping you out.

The police vin verification affidavit is pretty easy. They even have a deputy at the local DMV on hand to do that. I'll give a Dave a shout next week for his input before I start down the road.

Completely unrelate but wtf is a "bmv"
Around here it's the DMV, department of motor vehicles. What does bmv stand for?

I just registered a bike in vermont and I'm not even a resident there. I walked in with my Georgia driver's license, a bill of sale, and proof of insurance, and walked out with a green Vermont plate. The bike I bought was previously registered in Vermont and I wasn't required to do anything other than show my bill of sale, license, and proof of insurance along with the required forms, so I'm not sure what else you would have to do with the police verification. They charged 6% on the sale price, so keep that low if possible, and then $41.00 for the plate/registration. I can send you the forms if you need them or show you how to do it.

In Alberta Canada, you can register cars, trucks, motorcycles, really anything under the Personal Property Registry, it is cheap to register for a year,or if i remember correctly its 400 to register it for infinity,LOL ya , thats right an Infinity. Once it is registered as your personal property you can register it as a motor vehicle or motorcycle. I registered my 81 f150 this way. Im pretty sure it is right across Canada called PPSR, the States should have some kind of Personal Property Registry like this.

Kiss my ass rich :)
Department is better than bureau. Indiana is dumb

Only if'n you've got all the gravel out of it, I have soft skin

Healing slowly that's for damn sure there's probably still gravel embedded in my hip.

I was able to complete the title and registration process today so now I am legal! Thanks for everybody's help and thanks to Legendary Motorcycles too!

Now I will try to get it running well enough to take to the GA mountains on the long 4th of July weekends! If anybody is planning on being in the N GA area (including any nearby riding areas) feel free to PM me. I'll start a build thread soon.

Congrats!! I'm very confident this is possible in all states. A lot of people are just simply unaware of the process on how to do so... Please either comment here or start a new thread for titling untitled bikes in Florida so it is documented and other Floridians will have the knowledge to get their bikes titled.
