to those who have made a metal seat

Been Around the Block
My neighbor just gave me his English wheel today with a set of dies. I've never used an English wheel before but am.going to attempt to make a small rear cowl. Another buddy of mine said he'd let me use his brake to make the seat pan.

Any tips for a first timer? This will be my first attempt at metal working so anything from fundamentals to tricks and tips will be helpful

bradj, your post always amuse me. They make it hard to keep a straight face (my office at work has windows on all sides)

When banging metal always try and keep in mind that the metal is only a slow moving liquid. For a first timer, get a lot of scrap the same thickness. Piss around with the same idea you want to end up with on the trials pieces.

Piss around some more.

I find a nice Single Malt Scotch Whiskey helps the mind settle.

For a first timer you should plant your feet and try not to move them as you shape the metal. Otherwise your body is trying to compensate for your change in orientation, then your eyes see from a different perspective, then there is total confusion.

Piss around some more.

Use the English wheel to make a phone so you can call a fiberglass supplies lol. Jk nothing beats a well made pan

Good luck if it is a Horror Fright yellow wheel very springy If you want to make it easier do it in 3003 aluminum nice soft stuff

I am learning too. 3003 apparently is the way to go. I picked up a different alloy because it was cheap and I am learning to make it work. Good luck, wear some good gloves and watch your thumbs
