Tom's BMW R80. Straight from Munich. -- FINNISHED --

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

OK ........... one for my German cousins. I see some VERY radical German bikes in the mags ......... they are apparantly road ridden.

From my dealings with replica sports cars over the years, I know that it is very difficult close on impossible these days to just "build a car" - what's the skinny with bikes ?

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

As temporarily located in Munich, I'd like to see that bad boy (and some other projects from this garage) in near future!

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Nice progress!! I like the milling you did on all the covers, however surely water getting into the timing cover has to be back for the diode board?! Or is this going to be a dry weather only bike? :)

Really like everything else though, I love the mono's!

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Thanks for your input everyone!

Regarding the legal-do-ride topic: Yes, it is indeed very difficult to get a bike (or any vehicle) road legal in Germany, once you have done any sort of modifications to it. But we will figure out a way to get this thing through the TÜV (technical check before you can register your vehicle) so it can be ridden legally.
If we were located in the US, this build would be way more over the top. But as we find ourselves here in Europe, we try to build our bikes as radical as we legally can (and sometimes maybe a little more).

Due to the aggressive stance and riding position, this bike probably won't be used on the Autobahn or any longer trips. Therefore we will hopefully always be able to make it to a dry spot if it starts raining. But yes, you are right, it we were to ride it in the rain the alternator would probably fail.

Regards
Tom

Hey DoTheTon,

here are a couple more pictures of the current state of the bike to keep you guys up to date.
The R80 is mostly finished with only minor work to be done.

Tomorrow everything is leaving for paint, in the meantime I try to get the electrical problems sorted out.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Looks fantastic so far. I think I can see a few bits and pieces from other custom Airheads that you've drawn inspiration from. What colour is everything going to be?

.

Hey neighbour! (Dutchmen here..) very, very nice build you got there. I'm in the process of building my r80 cafe. I see that you made a custom front fender, and I like it very much. Are you using it on your v2? If not, are you selling it? I would be very glad to buy it from you. That seat is to kill for as well! I have the same questions about the seat as well.

Keep on the good work!!

Hey everyone,

for all of you who followed this thread, I just wanted to post completed pictures of the BMW so maybe you can draw some inspiration from it!
