Too much throttle for motor?

Hello all,
Just finished changing the jets and cleaning the carbs on my cm400 before I went out for the first ride of the season. Ran fine until I went past half thottle and the motor revved up with a complete loss if acceleration. It is really killing me on hills and on-ramps where I need that extra bit of oomf. I am forced to coast up to speed everywhere I go its a little annoying. I dont think its a clutch issue. Does it have something to do with my constantly overflowing and leaking bowls?

If it does rev, but looses power, its nothing to do with engine, combusion-wise. I guess the clutch is the issue although you think its not. An engine can not rev if it has no power to do so. A broken clutch will enable to let the engine rev, as there is no power needed to the wheel. Since you have the problem mostly when enginepower is needed (uphill, windy) i guess the clutch is just gone. On halfthrottle the clutch is still able to transfer the amount of force to the wheel, but when the engine rev's go up, the clutch can't take it anymore.

Check your clutch cable for play in neutral position and check your clutch plates. Easy way (kinda hackjobbish..) is to remove the clutchcable at the lever, make sure its loose at the engine aswell.. put the engine in gear (dont start it!) and try to kick 'er whilst applying the rear brake. You should not be able to kick the engine this way. If you can turn the engine, your clutch is dead. Remember this way your putting more stress on the kicker than what it was designed for, so do at your own risk and use your brains.

Ohw, and leaking bowls need to be fixed asap. If you bleed, you put a bandage on it don't ya?

Basically what Bert said, if it revs up and you don't see the power at the rear wheel it's the clutch.

And fix the bowls! You're pouring gasoline on a hot engine does that sound smart?

But no Bert I almost never use a bandage. Band aids are for girls 8)

Why do you not think it's a clutch problem? Sure sounds like it to me as well.

Highly doubt it... but that is not just a leak but a potential fireball. Typically your floats are stuck, set too high, or float valves are leaking past the seats.
 
besides, you say you've cleaned your carbs and changed the jets. Now, as they're leaking i guess you did something wrong while assembling it. Do it right, then go for a ride. What if it was your brakes and you found out during an emergency stop you did something 'wrong'?

Band Aids? WTF? seropositive musicians?
 
Changed the clutch to find out it was doing the same thing. Adjusted the clutch cable and that was it. Felt so good to open it up on the highway. Thanks for the help gentlemen.
