Tool Borrowing/Pass-around?

Coast to Coast
I don't know if this kind of thing goes on here, but I was thinking this morning, this website is full of so many helpful people and I haven't had any issues buying or selling from guys on here... why don't we do this sort of thing?

There are many specialty tools that rarely get used, bearing retainer wrenches, different sized spanners, etc.
I'll admit, I was thinking about this because I'm stuck at a point in my project where I can't get my bearing retainers off, and it really looks like the only option is to buy the proper tool.

I dunno, I guess it would be hard to organize, and the only people who would want to participate would be people without these tools, but maybe there could be a tool-borrowing thread or something?
I know some people have bike-specific tools sitting around from rides they've sold, etc.

Just a thought, however impractical it may be.

I see what you mean, but I'd be super pissed if I had bought a tool, loaned it out and then needed it. So unless you're local my tools are staying in my toolbox :D

Auto zone has a great loaner tool program, free everything just leave a deposit. And if you really like it don't take it back!

The best thing about tools is after you buy them you can keep on using them.
Maybe not today or next year even but you'll use it again.
I have flywheel pullers, clutch tools, specialty bolts, etc that just sit around, but at this point pretty much any bike I happen to buy or need to fix I have the tools to do so.

Personally, just wouldn't happen. Tools cost money and when you pay money for them, you understand the value and care for them. When I was working as a mechanic (not in the trade anymore), rule of thumb was if your hand goes in my box, you lose it. With the people I had been in contact with, they didn't respect the tools if they hadn't paid for them so I just didn't lend anyone anything.
Buy what you need and if you feel you will never use it again, sell it to someone else
And I know this may sound harsh now, but when you spend anywhere from $15k and up on tools, you will understand

I haven't talked to a once good buddy in two years now because he lost about $200 worth of my hand tools and never replaced them. If that happened with someone I don't even really know... It would be ugly.

I have one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/blind-hole-bearing-puller-95987.html That I wouldn't mind loaning you for $20, which pretty much just covers USPS flat rate shipping in a medium box both ways.

But, if you watch sales at Harbor Frieght you could probably buy this for $45 like I did.

Maybe this thread will help. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=44407.msg484966#msg484966
Not what you were asking but there are some ideas here that will save you from buying a specialty tool.
If your bearing retainer has holes that a specialty tool needs to engauge, I have cut notches into a correct sized old duplicate socket that fit like this but with 6 points.

Also have seen Cresent (adjustable) wrenches with holes drilled in the sides of the jaws for pins to be installed and welded. Makes a neat adjustable spanner.

O i get it, its ok for me to have 18k + in tools but you shouldnt have to.

Naw, I buy things as I go just like the next guy. I have a lot invested in tools as well, I'm just dead broke at the moment. This has so far been a great community to me, so it was just an idea. And an admittedly impractical one

ha, just noticed you said bearing RETAINERS.. Doy

No worries, I was going to go and do the autozone tool loan thing for a bearing driver once I get these things off anyways... I guess that's more practical than a tool pass around, but they rarely have anything I need.
