Man Of Constant Throttle
I know this is probably futile as I go through it every year and always come back to realization that I have the cheapest insurance I'm gonna get. But I still hate that I have to pay some faceless turd $700 a year for the most minimal liability-only coverage when I'm not going to get more than one frustrating, rained out Toronto summer out of it. I'm almost frigging 40, with no accidents or incidents, and it never goes down. I made the mistake of looking at Geico for the US equivalent and it was like $8 a month. Sorry, maybe you guys have had crashes and the insurance has helped you out but I've had bikes backed into TWICE and caved in and I just had to fix it myself as even if I had that coverage, it would have only driven it UP, so I fall more on the "it's all a f$%**!! scam" side of the fence.

I know $700 is cheap by comparison, I know nobody insures vintage bikes and mine are a 79 and a 69. I've been with State Farm and now Dalton Timmis via Jevco. But before I even bother GETTING it this year (I saved 100% by switching to NOBODY for a few years and it was fine, but I'm looking to go on more trips this year), does anyone have a line on a better insurer here in the city or anywhere near? Someone told me a few years back there was a shady Chinese insurance place here, just a step up from fake, and since the legitimate places are basically a fake service too, I don't have any moral hangups with that. Anyone here have a line on them or any good tips? Old guy in a dusty office, anything!

Thanks dudes, happy almost-riding season. Here's my CB650 while we're at it:

Ya, I did the dance 2 years ago to see if I could get a better deal. I just about screwed myself out of getting ANY insurance when I let my current policy lapse by accident. You'd have thought I'd committed vehicular murder.

I gave up. :'(

I just pay the man, shut my mouth, and ride. :p

insurance in this province is shit and they are all the same if you ask me, give or take $50
Jevco has been bought out by Intact insurance so I am sure my rates will go up........I have heard some people talking good about Desjardin, give em a call
As for China insurance, if you get a lead let the rest of us know

Cheers

You're right on the money, there was a "general increase" when Intact stepped in as middleman. Yeah, this shit drives me nuts. I'm not that young, I don't drive a cock rocket and I have no accidents. I ended up just paying it, to some catty lady that talks to me like I'm not a real customer but some kind of accidental one trying to pull one over on her. They need to make some serious changes to insurance up here. It's a racket. You pay them 100% of the time for the probability that something shitty might happen 1/1000th of the time, and when/if it ever does, there's someone who's whole job is to DENY you whatever coverage they can, when (on a bike) it's YOU that's gonna be on the shit end of an accident. And then there's the whole vintage bike / 25+ years old thing. I don't see why any company can't just cover you for $5000 (or whatever) worth of motorcycle and let you replace the bike or its parts yourself if comes down to that.

Anyway, there's too many lazy cops in my new neighbourhood that do nothing but clock in, set up and give nickel and dime traffic tickets morning to night, so I bit the bullet. But please, if anyone comes up with something better, let us know. I'm sure most of the Torontonians here are familiar with these frustrations, and have worse stories than mine, especially those under 25.

*I think the Chinese one turned out to be Wawanesa, which just steers you back to the usual suspects.

I hear ya. The insurance industry as a whole is such a joke. I pay the same amount of car insurance now as I did back when I was 17 as a new driver (i'm push 30 now) no accidents and never made a claim in my life. As for bike i'm paying 1200 on ONE small little honda 360

well I guess it's because i'm a "new" motorcycle rider even though i've beed riding dirtbikes for years.

In Southern Ontario, we are simply an annoyance to the insurance industry. They don't want our business.

We desperately need some company to step up and say, "We'll take that business!"

I'd gladly switch ALL my insurance business over to some company that would just treat me fairly as a motorcyclist. :(

Are you paying $700 for 2 bikes?

My BMW 750 runs me $600 and the little Suzuki 250 another $350.

I was paying 700 for the 1000cc and 600 for the 750cc. Even though I'm the only licensed rider in my household, and can't ride 2 at the same time. I couldn't get much of a break.

Last year I paid 900 and 700 because my insurance lapsed. My fault. I was still "annoyed" to be polite!!

Mine will drop every year for the next few to get me back to where I was. :-\

I tried the "Dalton-Timmis vintage" route but got screwed there. I went to the trouble of getting a quote and doing the appraisals only to be told AFTER that they only do "vintage" for un-modified stock bikes. I was furious!! He said he told me ahead of time but there's NO WAY he did. I'd have picked up on that restriction right away.

I had to scramble to get back with State Farm. :-\

Pretty expensive hobby. :-[

My $700 was for just my CB650 (including a $35 fee to pay it in 3 parts vs all up front), but the quotes for my CL450 (under 500cc category) weren't much better, and I'd have to stack one policy on top of the other. They definitely treat you like an annoyance that's gotten in to their office on some loophole. And it's true, if you have to cancel or make too much fuss, you can end up with not even THAT easily. There has to be someone that posts here, old guard or maybe CVMG guys that know people connected to the insurance industry. Any company up here that made it accessible instead of prohibitive (especially if they got with multiple-bike policies) to motorcyclists would make a killing. And the Dalton Timmis' etc. shouldn't miss the business since they don't seem to care much for it as it stands. Who do you even go to to ask a question like this?

My State Farm agent, owns his agency, is a buddy, a Harley rider and a pretty down to earth guy for the most part. Over the years, he's given me the inside scoop several times regarding the goings' on in the insurance industry. Plainly, it's a mess. :p

In his opinion, there's really no where to go. Just keep stating your opinion every chance you get. Someone might catch on some day. :p
