Tracati

Got my Carburetor in the mail, my frame work and exhaust is done so I'm picking it up today. Next up is to polish the engine.

.....So...Are you ready for the opposite side shifter thing???every time i take my 1960 (bronco)out i'm hittin the brakes instead of shifting ....shifting instead of braking, it sure is a trip thats for sure took awhile to get use to, gives the bike character that your other bikes most likely wont have

I learned on a Bultaco Alpina. Felt normal to me. A standard bike felt weird! HAHAHA!

I'm sure it will take some getting used to. I have 5 bikes that all shift on the left and just going from one of those to the other with the key, hand controls and riding position is odd. Moving to the bike is going to feel really strange I'm sure.

Here's a shot of the frame brace clamped to the extended swing arm axle and the swing arm brace. I mixture of era correct racing tech and modern racing tech.

I'll be watching this. I had a 250 Ducati of similar vintage. Mostly I pushed it a lot, as it had a bad magneto, or so the new owner said.

Absolutely lovely welds, and i really dig the fact that you're doing it SO freaking right :) The bike deserves it!

Doing some disassemble work to prep the engine for bead blasting and polishing. Found a whole sub world under the sprocket cover.

Did a little cleaning and now it looks a little better.

I've had to use easy outs on almost all the bolts. Everything is totally stuck. The engine turns over, the clutch works and it shifts through the gears though.

I spent about ten minutes with some gray scotch brite and polish and the cases look like they will clean up pretty nice.

I discovered that Borrani is going to make aluminum rims again to the exact specs as their 60-70's rims so I'll be ordering a set soon. Sounds like I could have them in my possession by February.

I have a lot of options as far as electrical goes. I can covert to 12v pretty easily but then it needs a battery. I don't like batteries but it sounds like the bike will be more reliable and run more efficiently if it's 12v so I might go that route.

Thanks for the interest you guys have posted. I'm really exited about this project and can't wait to ride it.

The engine os torn down and needs a bit of work. I'm gonna put a NOS 4th over piston in it, rebuild the crank, new valves/valve guides, add new bearings threw out and a 12v electronic ignition that doesn't need a battery but can run lights. Here's some pics. Hop to have it back together in about 2 months.

You make picking up a Grimeca 4LS hub sound like picking up a quart of milk :)

This is going to be some sweet bike - definite inspiration for me to go find my own little Ducati single. Any plans to vapor blast the engine cases etc.?

Tim,
I'm bead blasting the engine and polishing everything our that would have been polished when it was stock so it will look new when its done on the outside and bee new on the inside. These bikes were very competitive race bikes in the late 50's early 60's. Stock they weigh less than 300 lbs and have over 30 hp. They will beat most bikes in there class and era. The only thing that can really catch them in similar cc range is two strokes but how often do you see a 1964 Japanese two stroke in the US? I estimate my bike will weigh around 250 lbs and have 40 hp when it done. If you can find one of these at a reasonable price I suggest you jump on it.

P.S. the Grimeca took a lot more effort than just running by the local grocer, it was a bitch and I no longer have a left testicle..........

that is so cool.
how hard is it to find engine parts? stuff like pistons, gaskets, clutch parts and other items that you typically need when doing a rebuild? Is there support for those bikes?

There's support for these bikes and I have discovered some pretty good resources. Parts can be kind of spendy though. My NOS 4th over piston was $250. My carb was $350. It adds up but a nice stock runner of the same make and model as mine is worth around $5k so you can always get your money back if you get into it right. I've had mine for about 6 months and I've found everything with some research and networking in that time.

Unless I'm very much mistaken [ and I quite frequently am ] - OR there's some levers / connectors not shown in your pix - it's a 2LS brake.

Compare it with a 4LS shown. Either way, doesn't matter, nice score and great work to date.
