I had an 86 Ninja 600....

Did someone say, "86 Ninja"?

Glad you mentioned the cold start problems and experience. I have just recently had a few issues (cooling related...manifold rusting through, tank rust, carb clean where I found silicone mess all over the diaphragms).... Anywho, I'm finally giving it a proper once over after seeing working on a few things and this relit the fire for a valve check. Need to get on that!

The head that tune posted seems like a good option if the ads still up after you pull the head. I'd say check er out first.

Thanks for visiting guys! :D

I think we're just going to bite the bullet and fix the head we have. Going to get some prices quoted soon. :)

O'k, back to the project and the photo update! ;)

Just a prefit/mock-up for today! ;) It should be a pretty simple welding job to get them mounted, then fix the shifter linkage and (the toughest part) create a method to activate the rear drum brake. 8)

Oh ya. The side stand is 'going' soon. Right now it's just holding the shifter in place. ;D

I have the same problem on my kz for rear sets except my feet end up at the passenger peg holes as far as where the pegs should go. That puts a huge gap from the rest of the frame. I have been thinking for a while the best way to tackle it. I don't like when the rear sets are extended too far from the frame as it doesn't feel solid when you put your feet on them. The bimota race tank I have is super long.

Wow "Hollywood", you must be some tall so-and so!! ;D Long arms too!! ;D Those Bimota tanks are very long... too long for a little runt like me. :D

For those 'way back' rear sets, maybe a triangular bracket similar to the old z1/h2 exhaust hanger? Something could be rigged up there that will still look like it 'belongs'. 8)

I'm actually not tall at all. Just what I have to deal with such a long tank. As much as I wanted modern rear sets on mine I think I will use the stock passenger pegs hole to mount the rotating part of universal Cafe rearsets and make a bracket on the one passenger mount to house the rear master cylinder. On the shifter side have the longest linkage arm in the whole universe.. Lol.

Well, a month has passed and still no head to bolt back on to the engine. :p It's nearly ready, but it looks like I'm going to miss running the kz at our last vintage track day of the season here in S. Ontario. :'(

So, to cheer myself up, I ordered a gasket kit and some new rings for the pistons. We'll hone the cylinders, re-ring the pistons and pretty much have a new engine for the next time we get to run this beauty. :) Not the result I was hoping for, but such is life. :D

I'll be sure to toss up some pics and maybe a short vid when we finally get to it. 8)

Meanwhile, I can't miss the track day, so, I've been inspired to prepare a 2nd Trackbike. ::) Check out the 'Mongrel' thread in this section. :)

Well, I got the rebuilt head back last week. ??? Only about 6 weeks late. :(

So, time now to hone the cylinders and put this beauty back together to see what else can go wrong. ::) :D

Why didn't you get the honing done while the head was out?

Well, there's no hurry. The snow will come and go before I'm riding this thing again. :D That and I had 'issues' with the rest of my stellar fleet to deal with. ::) ;D

Just figured to get all the bits and pieces together first and THEN have at it. :)

Back together. Might have it back in the frame later today. :)

Well, I got totally fed up with fussing and not having the right size shims to get the valves adjusted properly... so I dropped the whole shebang off with another buddy to finish it.

He's a pro racer and knows his stuff. :)

Don't let it get you down Dreski. Next time... get a good set of feelers and micrometer if yer fat add up the feeler and shim and write down the correct shim needed to correct the spec, if skinny (tight) stick a smaller size shim in till you can measure with the feeler. A nice Pinot Noir is great for calming nerves

Shim math isn't a walk in the park for MOST people, don't be too frustrated if that was part of it. Then not to mention the actual labor. Like tune says, a couple drinks may help. :D

Ha! Thanks for the encouragement boys!
It really wasn't the job itself that was getting to me. We have some issues with the landlord and I need to clear out my bike space for a month or so. We were trying to get a few jobs done before clearing out and it just didn't get done. I actually normally find this stuff quite therapeutic.

I appreciate the advice tho!

Thanks guys! This has been a really fun project! 8)

Very nifty scratcher!

I live at the southern end of Hwy 59 (it literally ends at the northern border of our property as you arrive in Laredo), so I like the number plate.
