Trail Tech Vapor & Dashboard 6V? Or any other ideas??

Hi guys,

I need/want a new dash setup for me 1977 DT400 (with planned front end disc brake conversion).

Just after some help, tried emailing trail tech but still haven't gotten a reply yet hoping someone on here might be able to help.

Was wondering if anyone can confirm if the Vapor will run off 6V's as I've read the manual and one part states 6V and another 9V.

Next question is what type of setup does the dashboard addon lights use and how are they switched. Will they work with a 6v signal from the existing indicator lights? If not can I swap the bulbs out to 6V versions?

If this is not going to work does anyone else have any other ideas for a nice simple dash setup which is not to costly?

Cheers

I think (note think!!) that they'll work off pretty much any voltage, I've got one myself but wired it in years ago, but remember seeing something about being able to connect it directly to the generator output (AC) on bikes with minimal wiring.

I would imagine it will work on anything 3v upwards as they have a coin battery as standard (so they work with no external power) but the backlight won't stay on without a supply.

Best thing to do is download the manual for the universal version and have a read up.

I know you can run them off of a battery if you really need to (hence the 9V), but I'm also pretty sure you can wire directly to AC like TwinPlug mentioned. 6V DC, I'm not so sure...

Dash is likely to be 12v items. You'll need to change the bulbs to 6v. If you have a DMM and need to screen a pile of bulbs, 6v bulbs will have a lower resistance. Bulbs are really defined by their resistance and the brightness is determined by the rated voltage usage. So, if you can't find any 6v bulbs, some 12v high current bulbs with lower resistance will be fine with 6v. They will just be at a lower brightness. You don't need really bright dash lights.

The backlight built into the vapor is an LED I believe, the add-on dash surround I don't know about but would imaging they're just 12v lamps.

It's probably much easier to convert the bike to 12v using a universal single phase regulator/rectifier - you'll need a 12v battery, bulbs and a flasher relay too.
