Turn Signal Wiring Harness Help!

Laughter13

Rose is my 77' Honda CB400F... my first bike
have a 1977 Honda CB400f Super Sport

Looks like one of the previous owners chopped up the wiring harness a bit to put in a new electronic starter, since we all know the oem's always go bad... but then he did something weird to allow for a headlight toggle. I think he used part of the original turn signal wiring to get that to work.

So... long story short. I want to put turn signals back on the bike, but dont want to have to mess with the wiring the previous owner did. I thought there might be a turn signal wiring harness that i could pick up and wiring the turn signals from scratch. Anyone ever seen one? or have any suggestions on how to get signals back on the bike?

Thanks!

awesome interactive wiring diagrams.....

so i guess no one has seen a universal wiring harness for turn signals? I am assuming then i need to troubleshoot the existing wiring harness and see if i can get it to work....

yeah, I think this is where you should start. It's the only way to determine what does what once people start messing with harnesses. Unless you return it to stock, and pick up an old harness - but that could have it's own problems.

Get yourself a multimeter or circuit tester and go to town. You'll need to document your results somehow for reference too.

Good luck.

Screw it......just make a whole new harness..

well.... spent four hours messing with the wiring yesturday, and ended up worse than i started.

Whatever someone did, they have made a pretty good mess of the starter wiring, turn signal wiring, headlamp wiring, and probably more than i want to know.

THere is a new starter relay, i think, under the seat that someone put in when they fixed the electric starter. The wires were way to short and made it difficult to get at the air box, so i chopped out some of the mess from that and rewired it with a little more room. Then i started to work on the turn signals for about three hours. Once i got it where i wanted it i turned the key and @#%!@#!!!!

Of course, only one turn signal light up (left rear), and didnt blink when turn switch was pushed to "L". And the bigger problem, starter wasnt working after my simple re-wire job. :( I sat there for another hour pissed at myself trying to figure it our but couldnt.

I really dont want to, but i think i need to take it in somewhere and have a "professional" look at the wiring and the best way to fix it. What do you guys think?

If you look on ebay for Honda cb harness, there should be plenty around. A lot of older hondas use the same wiring.

For now, just try to get all 4 signals to light up. The flashing part will be easy after that.

A basic formula for turn signal wiring is... 12v to flasher, flasher to switchgear, switchgear to signals (split for front/rear), signals to ground. It's a pretty easy circuit to wire independantly.

for sure.... after three hours of troubleshooting the starter and turn signals last night, i had my first success....

All turn signals working per OEM spec. Starter was working and tonight to put the gas tank back on and see if she fires up!
