Two-Stroke Collective - 'The Smoking Lounge'

That's "somethin" all right!!  Wow!!

Hey lads,
I'm looking at picking up a T500 for cheap in good running condition (says the seller) but have never wrenched on a 2-stroke. Is there specific things to look out for and are the parts for these things easy enough to find for reasonable prices. Any links will be appreciated. I'll look through all the related builds again for links. Thanks in advance,

Jason

The T500 I'm working is my first two-stroke as well, so I'm on a bit of a learning curve myself. That said, there are ample resources out there and mechanically speaking it doesn't get much simpler that a two stroke. Tuning and porting can be as much art as science, but in terms of what's actually inside the thing when you open it up...there isn't much to it. The big worry on the T500 is the crank seals. If they leak (and many will on bikes this old) then you're looking at a rebuild. Replacing the seals requires splitting the crankcase and rebuilding the crankshaft. 3 of the 4 seals are still available from Suzuki in the US. The 4th seal can still be ordered from sources in the UK/Europe. Labor prices vary, but the shop I'm using charges $125 to rebuild the crank. The job requires some specialized tools, so unless you're going to do a lot of these IMO it's best to let a pro handle that job. Parts availability is a mixed bag. Most items can be found, many still from Suzuki. There are a few items that have gone extinct but there is a devote following for these bikes and in some cases new replacements are slowly being made available.

HEY SMOKE-HOLE BUMZ! 8)

I'm amazed that I have missed this little corner of DTT, obviously I am not spending too much time here after all. ;D

When you get the time, you can add "Stifler's Mom" to the build list.

I have read, bits and pieces of rumors, that there are some very talented expansion-chamber builders in Canada, anybody have any links?

Did I post this yet?

It's a Yamaha TD3 - very similar to a DS7/R5/RD apart from porting, dry clutch and few other parts. Frame is made of lighter/thinner steel too and they crank regularly.
