uni filters and stock airboxes on CB350

OK- so I've been doing a lot of reading about the stock airboxes and how they work with the CB's CV carbs. I've also read about Pods, Unis, K+Ns. The consensus from what I've found is that Uni's work the best as far as clamp on filters go, but still require some tinkering about to get rid of flat spots. Stock airboxes provide the best airflow/pressure for the CV carbs to work their best (and with a minimum of tinkering) but are obviously way more restrictive.

So, in my eternal quest for rigging shit together in the stupidest way possible, I guess I'm gonna ask if it's even worth attempting to run Uni filters inside the stock airboxes. Now, hear me out- I was planning on cutting off the stock snorkels on the back of the airbox so they can breathe better, and I was going to remove the factory element and just use the back panel to seal the box's back side and still utilize the tube that connects them under the battery box to keep pressures equalized.

In theory I can retain the smooth, even pressures and reduced turbulence that the CV carbs like to see, yet have the increased air flow that pods (and a somewhat opened up airbox) can provide.

Am I making life too hard for myself? Would this be more easily accomplished by replacing the stock air element with Uni foam? Or should I just run the damn Uni clamp ons? Am I a complete moron?

EDIT- I should add that I haven't even started my motor rebuild yet- Just planning on running chopped CL pipes and maybe just bumping the compression a little. I'm not going all out. I'd rather have driveability over spending most of the time in the garage messing with it.
 
you may already know this but you can buy a kit with two uni filters that lets you continue to use the airbox covers. not exactly what you're saying, but kind of similar.
