Name is Tony and I havent been on a bike in about 20 yrs but always been on my mind. So a month ago when the bug started biting real hard again I picked up a 71 CB500 Bobber. I wanted project material but not something I couldnt get on the road in good time. So she has already been hardtailed and pretty much in the style I dig but has a charging problem. Ran hooked up too a trickle charger but once you remove it she will cut off. I changed the stator and gonna change the rectifier tomorrow. She looks ruff so matches nice with my El Camino ill never finish.

Bienvenue!
Be careful until you get the rust knocked off your ridin' skills ;)

As for the bike... does it have a good battery in it? My recent experience with my Honda is that they won't run without a good battery.

and a side note: Where ya at in SC? There's a couple of others on here in the Charleston area. I'll be visiting the Columbia/Fort Jackson area next month for my sons graduation from Boot Camp.

Yeah, I hear you on rusty skills. The battery is "new" when I bought the bike but could be drained so ???. Im in Anderson transplanted a year ago from Miami, FL. My nephew just joined the Marines.

Im definetly in the Columbia area. And close to Ft. Jackson, Forrest Acres to be exact. Which Friday will your son be graduating? I work out at the base almost everyday, bring a reflective vest if you plan to ride out there.

He's graduating Thursday Aug. 19th. We're driving up Tuesday (12 hours) to be there for Family Day on Wednesday, then Graduation on Thursday. Leaving Friday but will probably take two days to drive back. Do a little sightseeing on the way :)
I'm not taking the bike though. It'll be me. the wife, my younger son, and my in laws, piled into the Yukon.

+1 with Redbird on the battery. Just get a new one (cheap at Wallyworld or Advance), and see how it does. You can't chase electrical gremlins on a bike if you're not sure of the battery. Besides, swapping in a battery is alot easier than replacing components that may be dusty but still good.
BTW, greetings from Johnston, SC, a bit south of Greenwood...

Got a new battery and she started on first kick but when I let off on the gas she turned off. Guess I got work.
