Cost for one thing. An accurate gps will set you back a pretty penny. That is of course you go with something like a dakota digital gauge. Even the tom tom units cost a small fortune. Another thing to be careful of is the battery life/ charging. You could put in a charging cord that shuts the unit down with the ignition.
Oh ya, gotta plug the hole in the speedo gear on the wheel too.
no signal in tunnels, and gps is iffy about getting signal in some places.
go with a bicycle speedo. goes off a magnet on the spokes, and a sensor. wireless ones keep clutter down, and they are small as can be, and damn accurate.
My in laws got us the cheapest gps on the market a couple years ago. It was great for our first gps, but it lacked a lot of common features. The best thing about it was a headphone jack- I could go anywhere on a motorcycle and still get turn by turn navigation. Just something to think about.
I've heard that theres an app for your phone that has a set of gauges and it uses gps to calculate speed. But like Rocan mentioned the lack of signal would probably be an issue. I would probably just mount a gps and a regular speedo if it was me. But it can be done.
