Using small helmet as starting point for rear cowl fab work.

Well this one may be a brain fart in the making but has anyone ever build a rear cowl using a trimmed helmet as a starting point for the fabrication?

I got like 12 helmets that are thrash bound and they are a sturdy material to work with....

Should I go hide now?

I've actually thought about doing the same thing with a child's pedal bike helmet. Smooth it out with foam and bondo. It wouldn't be as hard but it would be pretty light.

You should definitely update the build if you do it.

Ive never thought about using a helmet. If you have a dozen destined for the scrap heap then give it a shot! you have nothing to lose really...

Here is my helmet seat. I dont really have any good pictures of the process, but you get the idea. Wood+helmet+fiberglass=Seat

I have a feeling Millennium Falcon could make a pile of Dog Shit into an immaculate award winning Bike.....Helmet into seat....No Problem

Haha.. that is quite a compliment. Thank. ;D and Jfman, it was a pretty princess pink bmx helmet I bought at target for $7.99.

Details on how you mounted the helmet to the board? did you fiberglass or just bondo over? I am lookng fo ideas but my fiberglass skills are lacking to say the least. Did you just use it as a mold? or did you use it to create the seat?

Sorry I'm full of questions.

No problem Gary, to attach the helmet I cut it so that it was flat on the bottom and the front (toward the seat) then I just used some epoxy to hold it to the plywood. I wrapped fiberglass around the edges and to fill the flat hole in the front. The glass is what really holds it in place. I tried to use as little bondo as possibly to save weight. I really only used bondo to smooth out any little dimples before paint. My fiberglass skill are not good at all and I was able to pull this off, so I'm sure you can do it. :) I'm sorry I don't have any detailed photos of the attachment. It was a pain but it was cheap and i am pleased with the results. I hope this helps.

Used one to build a master / buck, then a mould from it and then the seat. Figured Arai had pretty good tolerances for the tooling to build their helmets.
Never used one as part of the actual part, though...

A helmet is a great thing to get a nice round back end for the seat. My bike came with something like that, it was part of a helmet with a bent old ontario license plate riveted together. I'm in the process of making it look how I want. Lots of bondo lots of sanding. Fiberglass would be the way to go but i've never done that before. so i'm going to stick with what i know.
