I picked up a new to me XS this past weekend, and got a '75 motor, no carbs, in the deal. It's low miles... 10K and turns freely and seems solid. PO said it was pulled from a running bike and I don't doubt it. I know the XS's are hugely popular right now and realize I won't make a ton of $$, but I don't want to give it away either.
No - $150-$200 is the most anyone 'should' pay for a 1/2 decent complete engine. However, it's WAY less than it would cost to make a bad engine with poor compression good again.
You might want to hold onto it. Nothing ever bad about having a spare engine around. All the post-1971 or so bikes engines are pretty much identical except in later years where they added an electronic ignition, which changed the rotor and points system.
Engines with a 447 at the beginning of their serial number are all 99.9% interchangeable, and that's pretty much all XS engines except the first year.
It's a 75. PO was going to build this motor while running the bike w/ the current motor which I believe is an 80. The 75 motor has a starter on it... the bike in its current configuration is kick only, which I'm fine with.
I may hold onto it, but could use a little more cash to fund some other purchases. I'm tempted to part my GT500, but think I'll keep that one around as a long term project. I have a ton of spares for the XS so if you need anything in particular, let me know.
