i need to remove these valve springs and ive shit about a c-clamp and a socket or a mallet and a socket. but they seem sketchy as hell and i dont want to damage anything. and i dont have the money for the correct tool. i know theyre only like 40 bucks but thats 40 bucks i dont have. what can i do??
To remove the valve springs, just place a small magnet over the centre of the top of the valve spring retainer. A flat bar magnet works well. Make sure there is room both sides of the magnet to push down on the spring retainer. Take two small pieces of wood and place one on each side of the magnet. Then push down to compress the spring. When the spring is compressed enough the magnet will pull the collets out, and also stop them getting lost, then you can release the pressure. Done! You can also do this with a small round magnet and a socket to push the springs down.
To get the valve springs back in you will need to make yourself one of these from a piece of steel pipe:
