Vapor blasted carbs ends in hassle !!

I've only had one engine done, and it was completely disassembled. Only took the empty cases to be blasted. I know one or two people who have taken complete engines in for soda blasting and it has worked, but you need to block off all possible inlets to prevent soda from getting inside. Trace amounts aren't going to be a problem but you don't want it blocking oil pathways etc.

So if you're taking your engine apart, then by all means have it soda blasted (check the last few pages of my build thread to see pics).

Nice ! Yeah the engine will be coming apart alright, it'll be a bit different to the little 250 2 stroke .

Makes me want to invest in the equipment and start a business in Canada. Like I say, near as I can tell nobody here offers the service at all.

I don't think there's anyone by me either Tim.

Well if you do decide to set up a new business Tim you have one customer in waiting already !!

Hi, if you intend to have a lot of work done what about getting your own kit, I've priced up a kit here in France at £200 with soda at £25 a bag,it's not the most powerful kit but OK for my needs, also if the standard of work is so poor in your area you may be able to earn a few quid, good luck.

Hate to burst your bubble but a good hydroblasting set up will set you back a cool ten thousand bucks , that's before you even think about the chemical baths and other stuff you need to get the finish that is good enough to call yourself a professional

Vapor is different than soda. I made a soda gun for 10 bucks.

No bubble to burst, just pointing out there are cheaper options, I've had stuff soda blasted in the past and have been happy with the finish, vapour is the choice, especially if you need internal work, but for most of us soda is fine. No intention of going professional, just want to save a few quid, I've got a cabinet, £20 at a boot sale, the kit I'm looking at includes air comp, guns etc and safety gear, and will pay for itself on my next build.

Hi el simo,

I know it's to late now but in future, what about ultrasonic cleaning, I know companies in England charge £25 per carb or £35 for a bank of two, these companies specialize in carbs so no dodgy workmanship, and I would hope their is at least one person offering this service in Ireland, just google ultrasonic carb cleaning, hope you find your missing bit.

fully agree there frog, have a soda blasting set up myself, its perfect for carbs

Wow sorry for not replying guys ! Thanks for the tips, frog I got myself a VERY basic u/sonic jewellery cleaner initially . Was shite but the shop took it back and refunded money so that was ok. My other option was to send them away for an expensive job but I'm trying to keep my budget down and guys who have a monopoly on these things can be very annoying . Worth keeping in mind a homemade kit alright . Bought a 400/4 and the engine casings are plastered in horrible paint so I'll consider all my options closer to the time . As for the carbs I now am waiting on throttle slide for right carb as it was the wrong slide (Suzuki) and put in backwards ! Money money money !

Probably NOT vaporblasted. I've been vapor blasting more than five years and I know vapor blasting does not give you a rough surface like this. Is the surface porous? Mark up the surface with a black ink marking pen then wipe off the ink with solvent on a cloth. If the ink soaked into the metal and won't come off, its probably been dry grit blasted, not "vapor blasted". Gasoline will seep into every microscopic hole and soak the carburetors outside surfaces.

I'd want to sue that bum in Small Claims Court for the price of two brand-new carburetors plus your court costs. If he misrepresented the blasting process he uses and then ruined your carburetors, I think you should collect money from him and expose his fraud. Bums like him are bad for the business and bad for your carburetors.

Good luck. I'm Jeff at Vaporblasting by Bikesalot

Hey guys, haven't posted for a month or two now. So I got my vm 26s vapor blasted from this guy near Dublin . The guy had me running around after him for two weeks and it all ended in an argument on the side of the road with me taking the parts off him and paying of course. On getting home I noticed I was missing the top screw cap from one of my carbs !!! I've looked everywhere in my car etc thinking I dropped it ! I rang the blaster guy but after our 'tiff' he won't answer ! Now I'm missing one darn cap and it's holding up my build !

Any suggestions where I can source this one little part ? I've looked all over flea bay !

Thanks as always gents,

Si

Those carbs definitely don't look like they were vapour blasted in the proper manner :(

This is what they should look like when re-built after proper vapour blasting: Even the casting marks are still intact!
