damn you move quickly!

what grit did you shoot out of your dads blaster? any damage/pitting?

why the upgraded studs? ...now im thinking about doing that on my 350. anyone know if the 750 ohc and the 350 have the same cylinder studs?

Not sure, just used what ever they had. It was about the same size as the soda I was shooting originally.

I upgraded the studs because I've heard it's hard to get the correct torque on old worn out studs. I had the money so I figured what the hell.
I am glad I did, there is a big difference between the stock and APE ones.

These guys sell 350 studs. Only costs an arm and a leg!

top notch work on the project, all around. I love the color of that engine paint, and the tank really looks GOOD. keep on truckin!

Engine is looking sweet. I had a similar problem when I glass beaded my engine cases. I taped them off but there is no way to keep it out of everywhere. I am too paranoid that I missed a grain of glass to use the things.

Cool stuff man! I like the engine paint as well, its going to look really sharp when its all back together. What colour do you have in mind for the bodywork? I am guessing with the different oil tank and battery relocation you are not going to run the side covers at all? Should look pretty sweet and the open frame really lightens up the bikes look a bit.

Kinda curious about how you chopped your tank, as I am guessing it had gas in it before you cut it up? How did you get rid of the gas fumes? I have read all the dry ice, exhuast fumes, washing out with water stuff but am curious how you did it. I ask because I am currently riding my 750 almost daily, but am wanting to cut and weld in knee dents much like yours and repair some dents in the sides of the tank at the same time. I have welded on tanks that have been steam cleaned etc. but I would really like to be able to do this over the weekend to minimize downtime.

@fastcat14 Thanks, I am trying. This is my first time attempting anything this in depth.

@thompsonmx100 I feel your paranoia :) I made sure everything is extra clean, and I'm sure I'll octuple check again before assembly.

@Firestarter Thank you very much. I am going to paint the cowl and tank a midnight blue in a satin or "semi-gloss" finish. The frame will be a dark silver. Motor case is going to be semi-gloss black with the cast accent pieces. You are correct. I am not going to run any side covers.

The tank was interesting, It was completely clean and full of gas. I rinsed it with water for about 5 minutes. Then I let it air out.

I was the biggest chicken &*^& ever with the tank. I had a clothes hanger that I extended out with a match taped to and end. That way I could get it in from around a corner.... Absolutely nothing happened.

Then I walked up and dropped a match directly in the tank... still nothing. So I began cutting knowing that nothing bad would happen.

Onto this weekend festivities!

Finally cleaned up the tank.

Lots of little dings and old filler.

Made quite the mess too.

Steering bracket all fabbed up and working like it should!

The damper is from ebay, I just did a search for "35MM Steering Damper" and bought up the best looking one.
This one was listed as XS650 Steering damper, but whatever. It works perfectly.

I am not sure if I posted about this but the kick stand has been relocated up front for a cleaner look and so it doesn't mess with the rearsets.

Frame ends welded up, ended up being a nice tear drop shape.

Nice little battery box.

4513125689_1560a5cfcc_b.jpg

Even has a tab for the velcro strap, should keep the battery nice and snug!

Upholstery pan nearly complete! After I took those pics, holes were drilled through the pan and pins with holes for quick release pins where inserted and tacked to the pan.

Cool looking unit. Looks like a quality piece ;)

Is the 35mm the diameter of your fork? Is there enough travel lock-to-lock? Looks a bit on the short side.

I know what you mean about being cautious with the tank too. Can never be too careful eh?

Great work all round ;)

Thanks Ian!

Yes the 35mm the diameter of my cb750's fork tubes. There is enough to travel lock to lock on my new setup. The clip-ons reduced the amount of travel I had before (Due to them hitting the tank) So the damper is acting as my lock to lock stops, which stops the bars less than a 1/4 inch from the tank. Peeeerrrfect

man, that thing is looking really good, Engine paint is sweeet. Love the tank. I may be tempted to take your idea

beautiful work thus far. i love the cast coat and semi gloss black combo on the motor. not to mention the fab work. amazing.

I love what you did with the tank. It looks great. I want one now. great job. Your engine is looking really good as well. Nice eye for detail.

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated. I am 2 1/2 months into the rebuild, and really trying to keep a solid progress going.

This weeks goals:
  • Fab up the oil tank brackets. (Final frame fabrication!)
  • Clean up the frame, and send it out for powder coating.
  • Drop the seat off at the upholsterers.

Patiently awaiting the arrival of my piston kit from CycleX == Bore time and final engine assembly.

this is awesome. cant wait to see what else comes up. i have a 71. would love to see (and steal) ideas if thats ok. kudos to you.

Sorry for the lack of updates, vendor issues and laziness has frustrated me. So the bike is just getting slapped back together for the riding season. It will be fully painted this next winter. Until then I am just going to ride.
