There wasnt much of a street racing scene in Japan in the 60s and 70s that Im aware of... Japan was a pretty button down society during that time. Still rebuilding from WW2 and there were (and still is) pretty strict displacement rules when motorbikes were involved. There was a decently vibrant pro race culture in Japan, but it was all supported by the major manufacturers. Most bikes sold in the 60s in Japan were small displacement scooters really (think Honda Dream 50). They as a culture were more concerned with inexpensive transport than anything else. Also, culturally, the Japanese people of the time we speak of were a relativly rule following people in comparison to the Americans and Brits.
someone showed me a magazine of 70's japanese bikes built in to racers or at least look like racers. of course i cant remember the name of the magazine. it was in japanese so all i could do was look at the pictures. really great stuff. def the style i like. hopefully someone here can come up with a name.
bonozoku bikes have secret aerodynamic abilities that us non-orientals will fail to understand. the perfect angling of that bitch seat and front fender decrease the drag coefficient by about 80 percent...
Here is my 66 Superhawk modded in 68. Bridgestone gas tank and some diy parts. I later added a full dust bin fairing and clip-ons but the only pic I have of it is a slide. I still get all nostalgic when I see a nice one.
I googled some pics of ohers. A lot of them have it. Extra marker light perhaps? Weather station? Anal probe for unlucky pedestrians? The world may never know...
IIRC the Japanese have/had a very specialized flat-track racer, that the races were followed fanatically. But I think that had more to do with the gambling than the bikes.
500cc thumpers running alcohol IIRC.
Please tell me that the U.S. has something that hairy-chested (other than dirt). One thing about that vid: What is coming off of the rear tires? You'll notice it a few times as they go around the far (right) corner. Either smoke or water vapor, but I could swear that track looks wet...
Those racers are nucking futz!! On a wet track, sitting back like in an easy chair, wheel to wheel wearing colors like that??? Those guys have got to be badasses!!!
I vote for the Pedestrian Anal Probe myself! ;D Dude goes by the name of Naruto the Impaler!!! Feared Enforcer for the Butthole Tong.
