Its an RD400 tank that Bradj had his way with a couple years ago then sold to me in one of hits fits of rage. 18oz integrated oil tank, stretched about 4" with an FZR fuel cap and a Titan oil tank cap. Gotta fill it with Caswell to fill any pinholes still in there after the welding

Does this mean the same thing in American as it does in English?
If so I do hope you rinsed it out.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Doesn't look like much, but I did a lot of work over the weekend. Ran the tank through the dryer with some abrasives, then washed it out with acetone. Note, the fzr filler has a lip inside the tank that doesn't allow abrasive to poor out. So, had to pull it all out through the petcock hole, took about 2 hours to get it all out. Also frenched in the front lower fairing mounts. I think they turned out killer. I'm sure there is a much easier way to do it than what in doing but it's working out pretty well. Now I can get the tank, fairing, and headlight bucket to the paint guy and let him finish. Now onto getting the motor the rest of the way together.

How to french in a fibreglass recess

I looked all over for help on how to french in a recess into fiberglass and wasn't really able to find anything. I came up with my own way, here is kinda a guide to what I did with some pics below.

1) Make yourself a flat piece of fiberglass. I used one solid sheet with small strips on top for rigidity. Sand the non smooth side of this.
2) Find a tube or pipe thats the same OD as the ID of what you are looking for. Cover it in painters tape, and cover that in car wax or something similar.
3) This is the hardest part, the smaller the tube the harder. Lay the circle you cut out of the flat stuff smooth side down on the end. Then cut some thin strips of glass and lay them across the back pulling the flat piece tight against the tube. Then wrap the outside of the tube with glass. I generally leave some sticking out past the end to ensure that there are not any gaps.
4) Once its dry, grab some leather gloves, stick the tubes in a vice or something, and twist the glass off.
5) Use a dremmel or similar to smooth out the outside of the tube and back.
5) Cut a hole in whatever it is you are trying to french in, you want a tight fit, if it wobbles at all in the hole, the next step will be a huge pita.
6) Put the tube through the hole and get it how you want it. Prepare some more fiberglass, then back is around the back side of the item. I usually pull it apart once it has resin on it so its just fibers and pack it around the the crack with a paint brush. I try to dab a little resin into the crack as well from the outside to ensure there is plenty of coverage.
7) once its all dry, cut the outside off, smooth into the existing piece
8) Blow yourself off with an airhose and drink a beer

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Got the new Pistons in, cylinders and heads on. Did a bunch more powder work, and got the gauge mounted up. Looks better than I had hoped.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Nice work on the glass man. Pretty fancy stuff. Digging the bezel and dummy lights on the gauge too. Modelo has been my go to lately.

Had to swing by the body guy to pick the tank up. Needed to get the liner in it before he paints. So, gotta line it this weekend and get it back to him early next week along with the headlight bucket and fairing. I wish I had a better before pic, this one just doesn't do how bad it really was justice.
Really digging this rd400 extended tank, may have to give it a whirl. Really sits nice!

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

+1 on the gauge & lights looks spot on, keep up this level mate and you'll be finished quicker than ya think

Re: Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Quite a bit has been done,

Swing arm was taken apart, honed, test fitted, shimmed, put together. Rest end is buttoned up, rear brake is all put together. Engine is bolted in, coil bracket and coil are installed. Shocks are buttoned up. Next up is carbs, oil pump, neutral switch and setting timing. Anyone have a trick to find 4deg before dtc without getting a dial gauge?

Re: Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

4mm? Stock is like 2.0mm or something close and on our race bikes we aim for 1.85mm +/- 0.01mm

Are you sure you want 4mm? I'd suggest that you beg borrow or steal a DTI.
