vm30 overflow and running lean?

Been Around the Block
I noticed some gas coming from the overflow tube on one of my vm30s. The gas did not stop pouring out to i turned off the petcock and drained the float bowl. I inspected that the float lever was not stuck in one position or another then put the carb back together and started the bike. After a bit of bogging when trying rev the motor i got it running constant.

After a trip around the block im getting terrible popping on deceleration that i was not getting before.

Does this sound like a problem with my float height? Whats the propper float setting for vm30s and how do i measure? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

if gas is flowing out you probably just have some particles of dirt whatever fowling the float needle seat , clean, inspect with a magnifier
make sure you at least have the screen in the petcock, run some inline filter if you're tank is putting out dirty gas

You can sometimes fix a leaky carb by turning off the fuel, draining the float bowl, and then turning the gas back on. Draining the carb bowl drops the float down, and opens the needle fully. Then when you turn the gas back on, it flushes out the needle valve.

Thanks Alpha. I did that and the leaking stopped. I double checked my float height and its to spec.

The popping on decel combined with the bogging when turning the throttle off idle have me concerned now.

These seems to be contradictory right? Popping on decel means running too lean. So does a sputtering carb which i sometomes get. But the bogging when going off idle is a rich symptom from what ive read. Arg!

Bogging off idle could be a lean condition. I would describe it more like hesitation or a flat spot in throttle response.

Got it all sorted out now. My mixture screw was too rich causing the bogging. Carb no longer leaking after flushing it and refilling.
