wanted: R5 parts

I'm in the market for a few parts for a newly acquired bike of mine, a 1971 Yamaha R5B. I'm looking for a few parts that are usually taken off on cafe builds so maybe I'll get lucky.

I need:
front fender
rear fender
tail light (with bracket)
air box with filter, lid, and rubber boots
battery bracket

Thanks,
Eric

I almost have what you're lookin for.

Airbox has no lid (I thought I had the lid, I'll have to look a little harder for it), the boots are old and dryrotted, and it has a little bit of a rust problem. You can see it in the second pic on the rear, left corner, near the top.
And I have the taillight bracket, but no taillight.

Make an offer if you're interested. They're just collecting dust, so they'll go for real cheap ;)

Redbird: I PMed you.

I think I have a battery bracket.
I'm upgrading the carbs, so the air box won't fit after all.
looking for a tail light lens to go with Redbird's bracket or the whole assembly if someone has it.

I really really need a set of fenders though.

A great many RD250-350 ('73-'75) parts will interchange with R5 parts and of course the DS7 (250 counterpart). There are a lot of differences if you are doing an actual restoration though. The airboxes are different for example, but believe they bolt up (manifolds would then be an issue if you retain the piston port cylinders). It wouldn't surprise me if the airbox lid swaps. I do believe the tail light bracket is the identical part on all these models and maybe the tail light as well. Possibly also the rear fender. Front fenders do not interchange. Hope this helps to expand your search! Curious - what is your carb upgrade? Good luck on the fenders - I looked for a RD350 front fender for a long time - saw a couple ones nice enough (maybe) but they sold for crazy money on E bay ($400.00!!!!!). I ended up repairing and re-chroming one I had on hand. Good luck searching!

I e owned a few rd350s and an R5 in the past, so I have an idea about the interchangeability of most of the rd and ds7 parts with the r5.

You can run an RD air box in the R5. The rd just has a rubber boot on the bottom of the box. The RD lid is a bit different, but could be modified to make it fit. The rubber carb boots are pretty easy to find on ebay if you know what to cross reference. The last two I bought were about $18/pc. Not cheap, but they're out there and brand new.

The tail light came in two different styles as far as I'm aware. I can't remember if they switched in '71 or '72, but the lens got larger. I believe the brackets are the same.

I have a parts RD350, but unfortunately, it's missing most of the parts my R5 is. I do have fenders on it, but they're pitted beyond repair. The front fender from my last R5 went on my RD350, so I know they do interchange in that direction. If I remember right, the RD has fender stays that need mounting tabs and the r5 doesn't. I don't imagine they would swap in the other direction.

As far as carbs, I'm a huge fan of the koso carbs. They're cheap, easy to tune, and provide superior performance to old mikuni round slides. I think I'm going to go for a couple 30mm powerjet Kosos. My old Suzuki t350 (only 315cc) cane stock with a mikuni 32 vs the mikuni 28 on the r5 which is much closer to actually being a 21 incher. I don't want to lose low end, so I'm not going as far as a 32. All PWK carbs up to 32mm will fit perfectly in the stock carb boot.

Thanks for your input on the parts! Let me know if you have any more questions on the carbs!

I just got one as well. It's good to see somebody else is doing one of these. Unfortunately I need everything you do. . On the off chance you need standard 64mm pistons though. . I have a pair of new ones. I jumped the gun when I should have waited for .25 over.

I should be all set on pistons. The ones in there look brand new when I look through the ports. Knowing the previous owner, it's probably missing rings though ::) He stripped everything important off it and sold it to me as a "complete barn find" what a joke... anyway, back on topic. I may have a .25 over piston or two laying around if you need some. I know I have one used piston and rings and one NOS piston with NOS rings. I believe they're both .25 over? I've had an R5 before, so I'm a bit familiar with them. I'm probably going to end up spending a bunch of money on Ebay to get this thing back on the road. I mean, do I want to spend $90 on baffles or do I want to drop an extra $170 and get some chambers for it so I can drop the crusty stock pipes? It's a viscous cycle. If you need any other parts, I may have them either laying around or on my RD350 parts bike. Unfortunately, I think that most of the bikes out there are missing the parts I need... hence why the previous owner stripped my bike before I picked it up.

Cool. . I'd be interested in those pistons for sure. Do they take the dykes rings?. . I do have a complete tail light assembly. . If you want to work a deal. My airbox and boots are also shot so I can't help ya there.

And I hear you on the eBay thing. It's my first R5. I'm just focusing on making it run right now. . Points.. . Etc. Pipes are stock but seem okay considering the bike sat outside for a whiiiiile. Most things just need a deep clean. I'm not one to buy new if It's just a lil dirty.
