Water Transfer Imaging/hydrodipping, anyone?

Right after doing a traditional rattle can camo job on my muzzle loader, I happened upon a website that sold camo film. They recently started carrying home dipping kits. I'd love to do a motorcycle frame. Might be expensive, though. The process looks amazingly simple and there are patterns and colors other than camo (metalics, carbon fiber, etc.), although there is a toad pattern that is killer.

Here's a vid on dipping a gun stock. The home kits use aerosol cans of activator, primer, clear coat, etc.

this is something our shop is getting into, the equipment is very $ but it can be coated over and base coated as well so it will go well with what we do now. it is a awesome process!

Yeah, I remember when we talked about doing a motorcycle frame in camo. The DIY hobbyist kits are a bit expensive @ $100 (you don't get a whole lot of film for that $100) and I noticed suppliers like to print that they do not sell to hobbyists. Waz up wit dat?

Yeah, I bet it would be super tough after powder coat. I know my turkey gun has taken a beating and the finish has held up great. What would you estimate you'd charge for a bicycle (thinking my mountain bike) or motorcycle frame?

it needs to be cleared iether with paint or powder after it is applied

Cheers, there's a few places in the UK doing this stuff with car components and panels. I might send a few enquiries off to see how much they charge and if the clear coat after dipping.

This is really cool. I am currently restocking a rusty old .410 shot gun, gonna give it as a gift to my buddies son. I was gonna brown the barrel and receiver, but somethin like this would be awesome to try.along with the tank and fenders of my machine...wonder if I could do the engine !!!!! that would be Nuckin Futs.

An engine would be wicked, for sure. I wonder if the film would hold up to the heat, though. I saw a youtube vid where a guy dipped his hand in a carbon fiber pattern. That was pretty cool. So, is this how customizers have been producing "chromed" cars? I'd seen one on West Coast Customs, though they didn't show the process, they did show the rinsing. I'd also seen a Benz on the news with a completely chromed body selling for over a mil. Crazy.

no chrome is done with a spectra chrome process... it is sprayed. i have seen it done and it is wicked!

I've had the process done a few times on firearms.
I've got a file with lots and lots of swearwords in various fonts on black that I want to have transferred to a baby carriage or something else ironic.

I'd love to do a bobber tank up like one of these for the hell of it :)

Yeah, that's how they do the Steve Vai Ibanez Jem guitars. Do a Google search for them and you'll see some pretty cool pics. Just search for "Ibanez Jem Swirl".
