WeberKid's Build. CB450 project.

So I have a line on a free complete CB450 that used to belong to my neighbor. I should hopefully be picking it up tomorrow night, if not Tuesday night. The guy who has it currently is reluctant to answer his phone so it seems to be hit or miss right now, but with some luck I'll have a roller real soon.

In the meantime, it would be very helpful if someone could measure an accurate distance between the intake flanges and the frame post that sits between the carbs. I'd throw mine all together, but I dont have the mounts. just an engine and a frame. I could guestimate, but I'd really love at least 5mm of accuracy so I can continue work on my intake manifold.

Also, I've noticed everyone's engine mounts are painted steel. Why doesn't anyone machine them out of aluminum? I think it would look a lot better, and have a cool factor. thanks for whatever knowledge anyone has to offer

scratch that measurement request. going to pick up the bike this afternoon, he just called me back!
;D ;D ;D

I think most people don't machine engine mounts out of aluminum because most of us don't have access to the tools to do that stuff properly. Would look nice, and yep, would be cool, but cutting thick aluminum plate by hand isn't easy and when you're making pieces that should be identical... it's best to have the right tools.

Drilling big-ass holes in aluminum plate isn't easy either, especially when they have to be perfectly spaced to match the mounts. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably not worth the effort.

not an issue. I have free access to a machine shop. I guess I have another project on the table for myself.

I got a bike today. here she is down in the lab.

Thanks! I've only had it up for a few days, but people are really interested in what I do with my spare time, so I thought I'd start putting it in one place. Not a lot of my friends know how to make stuff, or how much goes into some things. A lot of people here know the ins and outs of a machine shop, so I just posted the final product.
I'm glad you like the wheels. They're going on my 2005 golf. I'm getting tires with my tax return. If you follow my blog, you'll see pictures in no time. The adapter is only so I have a template to redrill the wheels since the offset is so low.

HA! Theres certainly no shortage of ego in this build... HA HA HA HA HA HA ;)

yea, sorry about that I guess. I mean I just have a lot of friends from college who really kinda missed the boat on turning wrenches. book smarts sort of thing. They really like seeing how things come together. I wont mention the blog anymore here.

luck isnt the word for it! My neighbor is into racing his ducati 848 and I just offhandedly mentioned my cafe racer aspirations and he told me he had one he got for free that I could have. This is after I already got an engine to polish. super luck.

Im just kidding around man. I think having your own blog to help show people the joy of wrenching, and creating is good stuff. No insult meant.
And ya, you dont get much luckier than a free CB450... Ive gotten a few free bikes this year. Well Ive found them for and had to go pick them up for friends (being the only one with a truck gets old...). Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
