What are you paying per sq ft?

Thats a very cool spot.
Just out of curiosity what are they asking?

Not sure Sonic, but just taking a WAG at it, I'd say around $2950/mo rental. ;)

Also keep in mind that though many places are cheaper, the pay is also lower. Depending on what you do for a living, this may actually make a move less appealing. I know I can buy a 10 year old house outside Phoenix for a little more than half what I paid for my 70 year old house here in San Diego......but the average pay in AZ is a lot lower, and I'd be living in Phoenix again which is a flaming shit hole that I never even want to visit again. Sometimes it's worth paying more to be somewhere you like.

That's true to some extent. From my observation though, for most folks, the higher wages come nowhere making up for the higher real estate/cost of living, though I'm sure their are exceptions.

That is insane to me. Especially when you can buy something for far less a month.

Not anywhere near Hollywood you can't. That rent is pretty reasonable for what it would cost to purchase. The house across the street from me about 15 minutes from that loft space...in what would be considered a "below prime area" and NOT in beverly hills...just sold for $1M...at 1850 sqft. That's $540/sqft. Angelinos have gone insane...its official.

In LA, its a common theme to find dual income homes of professionals making over $300k per year who can't afford to own anywhere near Hollywood or the beach.

I have a friend that makes upward of $400k and can't afford a home in the area he lives in, a half mile off the beach in Santa Monica. Instead, he and his wife pay $4500 per month RENT for about 1500 sqft condo...again NOT ON THE BEACH...a half mile away...and no views.

1850sqft, eh...that's about the size of my house, an old farm house. Original portion built 1833, 4bdrm, 10 rooms total, sits on a bit over 2 acres, has the original barn still standing, attached 2-story, 2-car garage and has a small creek running across the property, adjoins a NWR area and no neighbors. It's market value here in rural Michigan...probably around $100k.

The trick is finding a good compromise.

The further from the city or beach the cheaper it is.

I'm originally from the very rural areas outside Fort Wayne, IN. So I am taunted by the properties my friends and family members have for peanuts compared to LA prices. I know the difference all too well. To have 2 acres anywhere near where I live would cost $13-14M. That house across the street I mentioned sits on a 5800 sqft lot....again...for $1M. That calculates to $7M per acre.

Where are you thinking of moving to in Texas? If Houston or San Antonio are on your mind, message me!

My GF's parents are in Dallas, but if I were to move it would probably be the Austin area.

As a lifelong Dallasite, I love this city, but if you've got the option, Austin is where it's at my man. Everybody's doing it.

I am not a fan of the city at all. My career doesn't revolve around being in a city (emergency medicine is needed everywhere). I bought in the country which just so happens to be 5 minutes from Barber's Motorsports Park. We bought our place here in 2003. 1500 square foot house on 8.5 acres with a pond for $130k. Built a 1200 square foot shop 2 years ago here for $11k outright as it sits (not including the contents). I could never do that in the city, and it suits me fine. I remember the days when I was making that choice and making the comparisons in price. I have heard several friends talk about pricing on the west coast and they are absolutely insane to me! My partner on the ambulance is from LA and moved here because his mother and father moved this way. He sold his duplex out near Burbank for $1,2 million (!!!!), bought a 2500 sq/ft house here for $180k. Needless to say he was able to buy new vehicles, toys, etc. with the money saved. He said there are a few things he misses about LA, but he would make the move again in a heartbeat. Funny how different parts of the same country are.
