What battery?

I'm replacing my old large battery on my bike. I've never replaced a battery before on his bike, and just wondering how I chose what battery. Do I just read the old one and buy the same? It's a 12v 9a, can I get a smaller 12v 6a or even a 4a? What will a change in amps or volts do? I have a kick start if that's important. Thanks!

What bike?

Check the OEM specs for your bike and buy that battery - get a decent brand. If you're looking to move things around and need a smaller battery to hide in a seat bump or something that's a different discussion.

It's a 76 Honda Cj250t. I'm looking to hide it in the frame, so no real relocation. I would prefer a small batter so it's easily hidden. Thanks

The jury is out on whether or not Shorai batteries live up to the hype when it comes to older bikes. Lithium Ion is probably not the way to go as they tend to be pretty fussy about their charging voltages. On older bikes, voltage can vary a lot and the battery is there to help absorb excess as well as provide juice when needed.

I'm running a 7.5Ah in my CJ360 and it's been doing well do far (though I've not used it for more than a couple of months). I went with one of the batteries that are designed for backup computer power and alarm systems.

Something like this would work great on your 250 (though you will need to change the connectors in your wiring harness):

would a battery like the alarm battery work for a GS450 with lights and electric start? What is the smallest I could go and hide in a hump?

Sonreir, do you have any pictures of that battery in your bike? I bought a 12v 12ah agm like that and was hoping to use it in my 81 cm400t. I wasnt sure how I was going to hook it up.

I got this 7AH battery for my CB500. It is much smaller than I thought. I will take a pic of it next to a soda can so you can see. Give me a couple hours.

As promised...

7AH in front, standard 12AH in back.
