What could cause this?

I painted my tank a while back and when I reassembled it, it has not been running right. It feels like it is staved for fuel. Petcock and tank seem to be fine. So I pulled the tank to put an extra tank on it and this is what i discovered. I do remember leaving the ignition on with the motor off. I did not discover it until the next day when the battery was dead. I'm assuming that's what caused this coil to melt. Is there anything else I should inspect?

I did check breather hole and it is fine. I am putting a new set of coils/condenser/plugs that I had ordered for another bike. I'll report back to see if this fixes my problem.

I doubt the paint did it ::)

The ignition should be off when the key is pulled if the key is always pulled when not riding the coils dont melt... But the running issue points to a grounded short also.

Solved

Replacing the coils/plugs/wires solved the issue. I now tend to believe the coil must have melted when I left the ignition switch on. Since the bike resides in my garage, I usually leave the key in. I think I will now start pulling the key out so that it will not happen again. That set of coils was $130--costly lesson.

Nice! Followup with a check in a day or so to see if any parasitic draw has robbed the battery of any V's

Happy Trails!
