What Is This Worth?!

Hello. I'd like to start off saying that I am a new rider so please do not be offended by my limited knowledge of this subject. I have always wanted a cafe racer since I was a little kid. It will be the only bike I wish to ride. That being said I've had my eye on a bike nearby but I do not know how much it is suppose to go for. I'd like to pick it up considering everything is good but only for the right price. Please give me some input about the pricing and what I would need to be aware of for this particular bike. Thank you in advance!

Honda CB 550k Cafe Racer

I purchased a completely original, clean titled, Honda 1978 CB550K from its original owner a year ago as a café racer/rebuild project because I love bikes. The bike now has 18k on the odometer after 32 years.

The following have been done within the last 500 miles: frame up restoration with frame freshly painted, new front and rear tires, all four carburetors cleaned with NEW low and mid jets, UNI air filter, NEW rubber intake boots from air box to carbs (hard to find), carbs professionally synchronized, new 530 gold chain, original clocks rebuilt and cleaned, new front and rear brakes, rebuilt front brake caliper with new seal, rebuilt brake master cylinder with new seals, stainless brake lines, new battery, re-wired harness, new plugs, cleaned inside of tank, rebuilt petcock with new seal, new fuel lines and filter, new sport bike bars and grips, original side cover sanded and repainted, oil/filter change, rear solo-seat and cowl custom built (done correctly and old school), polished steel tank (not chrome) and cowl, removable leather seat pan, vinyl café seat, new front and rear turn signals.

This has been a terrific Café Racer project which I have greatly enjoyed. This bike runs, shifts, and stops beautifully! I have ridden a few hundred miles since total rebuild and it runs like new. I cannot express how much work went into completing a project like this. I have replaced all of the parts with NOS or original parts whenever possible. The level of cleaning and polishing was incredibly time consuming. It is so clean, it is often parked on display in my living room! It does not have a rear brake light since I couldn't find one with the vintage look I wanted; the wiring is all ready though and would be a direct plug in.

its a nice bike, but for the price i would atleast expect the engine to be gone through... and some more extras and upgrades.

So how much would you say is a good price for the bike?

if it all checks out, motor and electronics are good, id try and get it for low to mid 3k...3-3500... california is priced like that so it will probably be an average price

make sure its in good shape though.. and lets wait for some more to chime in with their thoughts

When I get a bike like this would it be common to have to urge to mod the bike more than it already has been? And also, if everything checks out with the motor and electronics, what would I be expecting in maintenance costs in the future?

Thanks for your quick replies.

Yup, the more you get into it the more you will want to change.
Maintenance shouldn't be too bad, oil, battery, points, and that should be it assuming you can do your own mechanical maintenance (valves, timing, and carbs)

droool....i am a sucker for the matching polished tail and tank. Engine looks clean, seems like he has taken care to spice it up in the right areas and has given attention where needed. I'd say anywhere between $3,300 to $3,700 is probably a good deal on that bike.

Oh nice... I actually grew up in Modesto but I'm living in SF area now.

I'm trying to push the guy to give me a better price on the bike but he just e-mailed me saying someone is checking it out for his asking price. Best I can do is hope the guy doesn't buy it. Hahaha.

I'm not a fan of polished steel, although properly clear-coated it should be at least as durable as paint?
Guy is probably into it around 4 grand (if he had to pay someone to do all the work?)
I know your a bunch of cheap asses here but $3500 isn't unreasonable, 550 is real reliable motor, I beat the hell out of mine for 74,000+ miles (rebuilt at 32,000 miles, big bore, etc)
My 360's have cost me between $650~$800 before I even start work on them, it depends on the area and what your prepared to pay

crazypj is right! see 3500 is not bad especially considering, once again, californias tendancy of overpricing vintage bikes.
