ok so i have been rebuilding a 1981 suzuki gsx250 for the last few months, recently i got it running took it for a ride and it died on me. originally i thought the problem was my alternator. but have realised that is not the problem. since the bike died on me it has not started again. the starter turns over, the battery reads 13.7v and i did a test to check my spark plugs by earthing them against the frame and i get good spark. carbs have been rebuilt recently. what else could be the problem if i am getting spark? i have not changed the timing at all. does anyone know any tests i could do? all help welcome as i am new to this!

I want to say compression is next. Depending where you're from, some auto parts stores can "rent" you a compression tester - just make sure you get the proper size spark plug fitting.

Are the plugs wet with gas after you try starting the bike?

are you getting fuel to the carbs? try opening the drain screws on the bottom of the carbs and see what comes out. if memory serves that bike will have a vacuum operated fuel tap, if theres no fuel in the carbs try turning the tap to 'prime' which bypasses the vacuum operation. if theres still no fuel thru to the carbs, its probably a problem with the tap (blockage perhaps, is your tank clean inside or got rust in it?)

alternately, buy beer, open and consume (not that dodgy XXXX stuff though LOL)

hope this helps

Its not the tap as I just hooked up a fuel bottle to the carbs. And they filled up as I saw the fuel level drop in the bottle. Im quite stuck for answers. Dw I stay away from the xxxx

ignition timimg? i know its electronic ignition and you're getting a spark, but is it at the right time? could the ignition unit on the crank have slipped at all?

well done staying off the XXXX too.
