What keeps you motivated?

yep and it keeps you wrenching on stuff at least. I blew my whole budget last winter to just fix my GL, it was supposed to go to brake upgrades and suspension but instead I get to keep riding it mostly stock.

As long as you have something to ride, be happy! I hope on my little 80cc cr just to ride something every now and then lol

I like going on Instagram and view tags of the bike your building. I subscribe to #xs650 #cb400 for example. Excellent thread. Always wondered how everyone keeps motivated on a project.

Like a lot of members on DTT, I have several projects going at once. Sometimes when I don't have the money for one, I'll do the small stuff on one of the others. Like the old
saying, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

Checking out DTT everyday helps alot, see what others are doing, or ask for a little help. I try to do something on one of my bikes at least 2-3 times a week, even if it's only for 15 minutes. When you see you're making a little progress, that helps keep me going.

My problem is "Fear of finishing". I have 3 projects going right now, with 2 more in the idea stage. One is 90% finished, on the road and running great, BUT...I have a lot of little detail work to do on it. So it's either ride it or work on it along with my three other running bikes in the garage, well the weather is good so it's ride them. The second one is running, but no lights/seat, can't wait to take it out, but I'm riding.

My three NONproject bikes all need a little detail/cleaning/maintenance and some
neat little pieces that I want to put on them, so some of my project bike money and time goes there sometimes.

But the one thing that really keeps me going is I am a very lucky man in that my whole
family, wife/kids/granddaughter all like bikes and riding, so it's never a battle to want
to work or ride on one.

Motivation?

All of my mentors were dead by the time they were my age.

I haven't done everything that I want to do in this life, and I don't know how much longer I have to do it in.

When you are young you seldom realize how little time you actually have. Especially after you subtract the time it takes to earn the money to do it with.

When money is short (as in, the majority of the time) I make a part. No matter how small or seemingly inconsequential, fabbing up a small SOMETHING myself without spending a bunch of cash always gets me excited again.
As far as time... I just suck it up and deal with the pissed off wife. I know she'll never really understand the passion I have for this crap so... I just do it and deal with the occasional yelling match ;)

Making small parts (little victories ;) ) has lost it's motivational quality :(
Even though I always have one bike rideable, I'm having difficulty riding which is a real bummer :'(
Actually finishing a bike I'll probably never ride is real demotivating

That's awesome you got your whole family on board with riding too! I hope when my bikes roadworthy again I can start a little club for night cruises and what not, just to see what some people have around my area!

Yeah tell me about it.
I have my big project (SR) that needs a lot of stuff and I have my xs650 that just needs little stuff to be a good reliable bike this summer, so instead of building the SR I'm doing little piddly stuff on the XS. It blows but its not spending a bunch of money I suppose.
So.....I...WIN? Fucking with this guy motivates me ;)

I stay motivated when things go right. When they go downhill it gets tough. I then need to take a step back, regroup and push forward. Unfortunately right now I have things on the house that need to take precedent over my project buts its making me hungrier. I need that eye of the tiger like rocky.
