i measured voltage out of each individual yellow cable coming out of stater and it measured to be 12.3 volts.
is this considered to be low? should i have the stater re-wound?
i do have brand new voltage reg/rectifier from ricks motorsports

Hope you are measuring stator wire to stator wire and not stator wire to ground.

Nope, he's measuring from stator to ground without it being isolated.
In all probability the rectifier has 'died' bext thing to do is replace it with a modern one.
550 has a EMS system, has to have a feed to field coil so make sure you get the correct one

You isolate the stator by disconnevting from main harness. Unplug the block connector with the yellow wires
If your seeing DC your either checking the field winding supply or rectifier has short circuited
You should have 6 wires total coming out from under sprocket cover and tied to frame behind left side panel, light green with red trace is neutral, I'll have to look at my 550 parts to get all the other colours but I think it's a white and a black (or green?)
