What wheels will fit

I have a 1978 cb400tII and I want to ditch the star wheels.

Do any of you know of other models and years that will bolt up?

Thanks, this site has been such a big help.

look for cb400tI wheels

What it comes down to is how much fabrication you feel like you can do.
In truth just about any wheel that can slide between the sting arm(s) and the fork legs "can" be fit. You may need to account for differences in axle diameters and chances are good that you'll need different size spacers but it's all doable. Find some wheels that are the same diameter and width as your comstars and go from there.

How are old wheel for reuse? Lets say I get a wheel off ebay cheap, nothing too rusty, and I want to lace the rim to the one on my bike. Will I need new spokes or can a shop salvage the old ones?

Depends....there's so many different rim center profiles and just as many hub diameters that chances are you'll need new spokes. You should probably get new ones anyway since the old ones will be...well....old. That can mean metal fatigue which could lead to a fall...which sucks.
To be honest, if you're thinking about using old rim hoops you may want to think about having them magnafluxed to check for stress cracks around the spoke holes. By that point it's almost the same as spending some $$ on known new rims and spokes and building from there.....

I don't see a difference between running my current 34yr old rims and taking another set of 34yr old wheels, taking them apart, and lacing a rear rim to a front wheel.

Basically that's what I'm looking at doing. I want a 1.85 front rim with a stock CL360 drum brake, and I've got a set of wheel laying around to do it with. What I don't have is money.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was looking for some cheap easy to mount spoked wheels to replace the comstars. I am trying to keep the build very inexpensive so I might just stick to the comstars and spend my $$ elsewhere. I can always switch to spokes later. The fab is not an issue.

Where are you at? I have a set of '78 CB400T1's lying around here in Dallas TX. PM if your interested.
