I was looking at a vintage R75 BMW today. Not sure of the year. The bike ran and all the parts were there. Seat was in good shape. Tank interior was in bad shape. The guy wanted 1800 for it. What would you guys pay?

I sold a 72 R50 that I had cleaned up and painted and was in road ready condition for $2500 and the guy snapped it up without even seeing it.

He has a title? Buy it right now.
Great bikes that are going up in value even as I write this.
Parts are everywhere and they're very easy to maintain.
Tech support is all over the place.

Not sure if he has the title. I saw him start it. It idled pretty well. He said one of the carb diaphrams was leaking a little bit.

The only thing i was concerened about was the tank rust. It was very well coated.

If i get him down to 1500 ill go for it.

The pipes are pretty rusted out too. Forgot to mention that.

I wish i could get pictures of it up. Its got a white tank with the rubber knee pads.

Well, some states only require a bill of sale for bikes that old, but personally- no title, no deal.
That's the touring tank. I like them better, but I think the toasters may be worth more. If it's all coated inside, why are you worried about it?
Any bike that old is going to need new parts; Tires, battery (BIG money there), diaphrams, filters, etc. You can get oil filters by Hi-Flo from PU. Get a K&N air filterand reuse it. Check the steering bearings. All the usual. They have great ergonomics for all day riding.

it never hurts to talk someone down, but 1800 seems like a good deal from what youve told us. Dont let this one slip by, youll regret it in the future imo.

You sure the tank was rusty? BMW tanks came lined from the factory, in a rust-colored coating ;)

Sounds like a good deal. I'd buy it.

Very funny Timothy.

Yeah I want it real bad.

The college budget is a hard one to incoporate multiple bikes into, but if I could flip it and make some money all would be well.

I'll keep ya'll, you all, y'uns posted on the purchase.

Sorry to hijack your thread.

Im kind of in a bind as well. I have 1500 to spend on a bike and here are the 2 scenarios.

I am looking at a 1979 R65 with 70k miles ( guy wants 1500 ) runs but needs new tires and when the lights are on the gauges dont light up. but they work. Exterior of bike is 7/10 ( red/burgandy

And the other is a 78 r80 with 70k miles and its clean but the starter is weak. They guy has the brand new starter to put on it and the rest of the bike is in great shape. exterior of bike is 8/10. ( black ) the guy want 1800 but i might be able to get him down to 1500.

I currently have a perfect, yamaha xs400 1977. in prestine shape but always wanted a BMW airhead ( heard they last forever) and also something I can go on the freeway with at decent speeds, to get to school etc.. I will be using as a daily driver, my yamaha is a daily, never use the choke starts first kick/electric from dead cold. . please chime in.

Brian, are you in madison county?

tete, both great bikes. The R80 maybe one of the best. OTOH, I've been all over the country on an R65 with no complaints. On the R80, the starter problem may just be a low or dying battery. Those bikes draw HUGE amounts of juice, and a battery tender is necessary. Those batteries are costy, too; $85 or $90 if I remember right. (That's for the Yuasa)

I'm not joking about the factory liner in the BMW tanks. Seriously - a rust-colored reddish coating. No shit.

No man, Santa Barbara County.

If anyone wants to go halfs on this thing that would be cool too.

Really rust colored? Wow, good to know.
