What's a good, inexpensive dual sport to look for?

Been Around the Block
I've been looking around on craigslist here in the SoCal area and I've been seeing a good number of used Yamaha XTs (various displacements from 225-350) in the $1500 and under range.... Are these a good bike? What others might be good to look for? I'm interested in staying in that under $1500 price range, with cosmetics not really important....

I kinda want something cheap and reliable to bomb around town and sometimes commute on. Also, it would allow me to take the time and effort to really build my CL450 the way I'd like....

Any input would be much appreciated,

Thanks!

I rode one in MSF and liked it, it moved pretty good with me 6' 200 lbs. should be pretty reliable as a good Japanese single.

there is a good rightup on these bike in the Motorcycle USA site I believe and the tech ahsn;t changed on any of them for like 20 years.

Cheers,

Suzuki DR series, Yamaha XT series and Honda XR series are all bulletproof bikes.

All should be affordable and all came in larger forms, with the DR still being produced in 650cc form.

I ride a Honda XR600 and can vouch for them being easy to work on and get parts for, with consumables being cheap. They're big fun to ride.

Cheers - boingk
