Whats the DUMBEST thing.....

Whats the STUPIDEST THING you've EVER bought for your bike?

Anything goes...

My stupidest purchase: the bike itself. I was impatient and thought for 550 bucks i was getting a steal regardless of what the bike looked like in person. now the money is gone, the bike is in pieces, and i have all summer to wish I had waited for a better deal... maybe a bike i could of certified THEN fixed up... Thing is I LOVE THE BIKE TO DEATH... even tho its more of a pile of boxes with bits in it right now...

OH WELL live and learn.

NOW whats ur story?

Wonderful pair of NOS Koni shocks... I was so excited I won... waited to get the parcel... took off one of Mojo's rear legs... held yp the new one... and realised the Koni's had the wrong ends :'(

Oh yah... the XS650 'barn bike' sight unseen for $1000... reason it was parked in the barn in ~1980?... they crashed it into the damn barn and left it there ::) (at least that's what it looked like)

Salvaged the deal by giving Tim the alloy wheels and selling it to another unsuspecting fool with steel wheels for $1000 ;D

If you're talking about our vintage bikes, then I would have to say rotors that I assumed would fit. Wrong! Now I have a hub and rotors sitting around taking up space. I thought about polishing the hub, painting the carriers, and reselling them on egay. For my sportbikes I would have to say tinted windscreens. They totally fade after a season or two and cost around $60 a pop. My favorite though, was the Lockhart-Phillips "Laser Line" (clear with just the edge tinted) that looked absolutely stunning when any sort of fluorescent light would hit it. It lasted one season before becoming completely clear! My favorite wind screens now are clear. Colored ones also add visual "weight" to sleek bodywork. I'm really turned off by the chromed windscreens. WTF???

Back in the day... around 1998, I think. This fluorescent green screen was cool but not too heavily tinted. It lasted about two seasons...

I am kind of with shrub...I bought a 76 CB550, almost complete, didn't run, but the motor kicked over. No Title. Paid $100 for it, with about another $300 in parts and pieces. Still not running. I am going to look at an XS400 tomorrow, that runs, and has a title. I am just not sure what to do with the CB in my garage. Buying the XS may be the dumbest thing, since I have time and money invested, and new parts sitting around for the CB, and most likely will never get around to finishing it. Oh man the XS looks sweet though.....$850 with title and looks to be completely original. (Did I mention IT runs?)

Ya totally, My bike WAS only just running when I had it dropped off but I was so excited to start work I didnt bother to clean the carbs and see if the engine was worth anything. So now I'm knee deep in bike parts with no knowlege whether the engine (which has spent the last like 3 months under a tarp outdside) will even run again!!

i guess my 1978 kz200.. which was in absolutely perfect condition, with 1200 original miles.. for $900. i just don't think the bike is worth that. i guess i got good use out of it, within two months i had around 4000 miles on it. i took it on a road trip and it was actually pretty fun. back in pennsylvania though, i was on a nice long ride around some twisty roads. then i came to a hill, and was scooting up it in first gear. around halfway up the hill, the bike decided it just couldn't make the other half of the hill, and began going backwards into traffic.

now, it's just taking up space and i don't really need it anymore. i need to put a new tail light on, and fix some things so i can sell it. last year i just needed a bike for transportation, and i didn't have much $$$ to spend.

probably selling my last bike for 900 bucks. a 98 katana 600 that I had just traded my old POS chevy blazer for. I thought the bike would be an easy fix (and it was) but I wasn't patient enough to check for the missing spring in the petcock that was filling the motor with gas causing it to not run... I pass it about once a month now, someone else enjoying it......

But, the thread is asking "What's the dumbest thing you ever bought for your bike?".

I think a whole bike counts... and I bought my first bike to get away from my first wife ;D

I was kinda confused about Mr. E's post. Your post cracked me up! "... and I bought my first bike to get away from my first wife"

Wow, didn't that make you feel bad??? i don't think I could do it, man.

I thought we all bought bikes to get away from our significant others? That's why I bought her a 49cc scooter. She can't catch me :)

Even the bikes that don't run keep me in the garage ;)

heh, not me... In fact I got the bike cuz i figured it would help me find a significant other... for travel purposes and impresions... I suppose it depends on what your current relationship status is

Actually, my wife is a little saddened that I don't ride sportbikes like I used to as that was one of the things about me she was attracted to! She loves that I still turn my head when I hear an in-line four with an aftermarket exhaust. She'll occasionally test me and ask me the make and year of the sport bike that just passed us. But, I digress.

This guy was buying all the 70's bikes he could find with the idea that he would rebuild them and sell them when he retires... and the steel's were perfectly fine, just not as desirable as the alloys.

He stood there and watched me try to start the damn thing while it pissed oil and gas all over the driveway and still pulled a $1000 cash out of his pocket... I would have walked away from the bike myself.

So nope... no guilt.

my bikes helped me find my significant other. we met at Pocono Raceway at a track day, and had talked on another forum before that.
i love that we can ride together, we like going on roadtrips on our bikes. i don't think i could be with someone who didn't like bikes.

this has gotten way off topic..
