Whats wrong with a barnyard bike? (look at bike link)

Found a bike(550f) that was sitting for 10 years, thinking about getting it, but was wondering what really can be wrong with a bike that just sat for 10 years?...besides the gas sitting in the carbs and screwing it all up, dead battery, maybe some internal rust?? what would be the worst case scenario for a non-runner?

Re: Whats wrong with a barnyard bike?

how can you tell it was running well 10years ago?
unless you trust the seller - he/she could be full of balls.

i hate to be a pessimist but it there are people out there who just want a quick buck off a stranger.
i bought my current project off a guy on ebay. said it had been sitting his yard for ages but ran fine before that. i took the gamble purely because he had a 100% positive record on ebay and all reviews were topnotch.

didn't start so i cleaned the carbs and rust out of tank. runs pretty good. now i think i just need new seals as there's a bit o air getting sucked in. haven't pulled the motor yet. am scared to do so cause i'm a noob but i think it will be pretty healthy over all.

good luck if you go ahead!

Re: Whats wrong with a barnyard bike?

Someone on here has just picked up a bike that shad been sitting around for a while. An XV250 I believe and that thing is full of rust with half the frame rusted away. They can get pretty bad so be careful.

Re: Whats wrong with a barnyard bike?

I just bought a bike that had been sitting for a couple of months with only "a wiring problem". It had no back tire and only an electric start. Turns out the motor is seized. No way I could have check it when I bought it. It is still salvageable and most bikes that have been sitting for a while are, just may mean more work to get it going.

Re: Whats wrong with a barnyard bike?

A key thing to keep in mind is that most people wouldn't park a perfectly good, running motorcycle for 10 years.

Worst case scenario is that it is actually a bomb shaped like a motorcycle.

That might actually be cheaper to fix than one that's seized, though. YMMV.

Why you got to be a hater Staffy, ;) I have that XV and yes it's in rough shape, but any bike is salvageable depends on how much work you are willing to put into it as I am going to prove to all the doubters, LOL. I looked at the ad, it looks like a good bike.

Snatch that bitch right up. Its been sitting indoors for goodness sakes. The carbs will be trashed but other than that - and that is no real problem at all - that bike looks great. Don't pay too much for it but don't walk away if it looks good when its in front of you either. Just keep this in mind, when you are planning on either a restoration of a cafe project a couple of hundred bucks one way or the other at purchase time really doesn't make much difference in what the thing is going to cost you by the time you're done anyway. Its a lot easier to start with a nice bike than one that is rusted and ate up by mice with goop in the tank and half the ignition system missing.

If it has a good title and isn't too expensive I would go for it.
If it still has contact breakers, it won't be possible to rev it enough to hurt it
I thrashed the hell out of my 550f1 for over 100,000miles, at least 70,000 with a 591cc kit and 'fast' cam

thanks guys, I'm thinkin I'll check it out this weekend, any price ranges you guys thinkin about? He doesnt even have one listed lol

Looks to have a lot of potential. Not sure how much he is going to want for it considering he would trade for a car or truck.

Not hating my man. Anyone here can tell I'm as level as it gets and folks can do what they like. I'm sure you're gonna get in there and do something great with that bike. What I was getting at was that with every photo there was something else turning up that didn't get seen before. With both my bikes I've had the same issues. A golden example is the CX650 which ended up needing a new front end amongst other things. I guess you should always aim to pay the lowest amount possible and point out any problems to the seller as you may need every dollar in that purse down the track.

Now get to finishing that bike JR ;)

$1 a cc at most, try to get it for 250 or around there first. If that was around here it would already be in my garage getting fixed on. ;)

Have to agree. As long as the price is right, that thing looks like a great starting point.

update...seller wants 800-900 for it, i feel thats a little expensive...im lookin to pay about half that at most...

Price is reasonable for that bike. Original paint looks very nice and if the pipes are good, buy it.
