Wow, some one run SAND instead of OIL in that thing? I guess I have never seen a follower with the cam pad WORN OFF.

I haven't seen one that bad without the cam bearings totally trashed.
Usually starts off as a tight tappet so oil can't get in there, surface starts to break up then it just escalates
What does the base circle of cam look like? (and the cam for that matter?)

This is all damage from the PO. Just wanted to make that clear. I don't know if it ever got an oil change between 1981 and now. From the look of it, I'd agree that it had been lubricated with sand. The cam shaft was ruined. The lobes were ground flat on one side. It was horrible. The bike actually ran like this until the timing chain snapped and we had to open her up.

Ya never know what you're gonna find when you open it up.

WTF! Sunflower seeds???

Yup there's your problem right their!

Mice and squirrels will put seeds in just about every hole they can find. I've seen crazier shit, one mouse filled an entire cylinder on an old farmall tractor FULL of wheat kernels. Made its nest in the air filter, had its pantry in the engine. ;D That cylinder is the size of 2 coffee cups stood on top of each other.

I had some type of critter make a nest and chew up a wiring harness in my car earlier this year. Cost me $240 to fix.

the reason that mice eat factory wiring harness tubes and what not is because alot of car manufacturers coat them in peanut oil , its alot more enviromentally friendly than say your usual hose lube. the mice and squirrells then proceed to chew on the shit
