I am surprised this hasn't caught on, This is a film about do the ton. It all started here at the Isle of mann, this is where the term "do the ton" came from. With out the Isle of Mann TT this site wouldn't exist, 91 views and 2 replys.

I haven't looked at the video but doing the ton didn't start in the Island. And the Isle of Man has only one n and m is capitalised.

Guy Martin is a columnist and tester for Performance Bikes.

BTW, It's the Isle of Man (with singular N). It used to be on the GP season, but lost that status years ago.

Check out any Duke Video compilation of search for Milky Qualye.

Dave Roper of Team Obsolete raced and won there a few years back or check out V for Victory. the late great Joey Dunlop.

One of my pet peeves is people who can't spell. I make no apologies for it. Isle of Man. Dick Mann.

I was not trying to be a " dick mann", and if you look I spelled Isle of Mann the second time with a capital M.

I was just trying to promote the video but if you want to get your panties in bundle go ahead.

Here is a little history on the Isle of Mann or Isle of Man.
Some spell it Mann others Man, the island is recognized with both spellings.

and here is a the history of Do the Ton

and here is the link again in 1080hd full screen :)

I wasn't calling you a dick. Merely pointing out the difference. Dick Mann, American racer. Isle of Man. The video is excellant. I've seen it on several other sites. I'm not getting my "panties in a bundle". If you care to check it out you won't find the Island referred to as Man or Mann. Only as Man.

touche, I stand corrected. Yes the island was called Mann when it was discovered. I was told it was called Isle of Mann, but now I understand it is spelled Man.

Cheers, I love this video and the Isle of Man TT

I will apologise. It has been inhabited for over 6000 years and has been a pawn in control battles up to 1400. The Norse Vikings arrived in the late 8th century and got thrown out in 1299. During the Norse period the island was under the control of the Kingdom of Mann. Gaelic was the spoken language up to the19th century and the island was called Elan Vannin.

I used to go to the TT every year in the 70s and its one place everyone who loves motorcycles should go to at least once in his lifetime.

Here we go again. Just because that was published in a magazine or on the web hardly is a guarantee of accuracy.

Quite clearly the term would not have been applied to Bob Mac unless it was already in common usage. The correct spelling today is M.a.n. The fact that it was once spelled differently is not relevant.

Good looking video. It's time for a human interest story and Guy is an interesting guy (pardon the pun). He's old school, work to race not paid huge sums to appear.

Well, I'm only 65 years old and the Kingdom of Mann left the Island 800 years ago. I'm sentimental but not that sentimental.

I am sure I pick it up in my history class some where that is why I remember it as Mann.

But Hoof do you have any photos, stories or anything of that sort to share with us from the island? I can find stories and have read quite a few of them, but a primary source would be awesome.

Thanks, Chad.

I've put a couple of stories up on "Beachcomber's tales of the day". This photo is one of my favorites. Its Robert Dunlop and Cal Crowe. I took it as we headed out of Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland to the Island for a race at the Jurby road circuit. Robert had just started racing and it was his first trip to the Island. He was hideously fast and brave from the start. I've posted this photo here before but I make no apologies for posting it again.

;D LOL ;D
Still never been to 'Island'.
I was hoping to , cousin married a 'mannequin'?(Manner?Mannist?)
I know they have a farm so probably plenty of space
But, I don't know her married name ( father, mother and uncle have all passed on so can't get info)
Guess I should have stayed in touch better when we were kids ;)

Hell PJ, there cant be that many folks on the Isle. Get a directory, and start calling folks with the same first name!

There are very few true Manx names. And the Island isn't that big. It shouldn't be that hard to find your relatives. Before the "Milky Bar Kid" I think the most famous Manxman was Fletcher Christian.
