Where to get bearings for neck? CB450... Are they really that difficult?

I took the neck apart and broke my forks down to refinish.. The damn bearings fell out (as they're loose in there) and I can't believe it but I can't locate a kit anywhere on the net. Can anyone make a suggestion? I would like to get a tapered kit or something...surely there is a better way than placing BB's in there one at a time?

Thanks!

Easiest way to put the BB's back in is to put a good rind of grease on the one race first then start sticking them in. I use sticky axle & wheel bearing grease. Haven't gotten around to getting into the tapered bearing sets yet.

10/4... So...........say I lost some of them. ;D Any idea where to get some new ones not even tapered...

Find a shop that sells bearings, they ususally sell loose ball bearings. Take one of the orginals with you and they will match them up.

He never ceases to amaze me with what he has in stock...

What I've noticed is that a lot of SOHC Honda's share the same head bearings, don't quote me on that for the 450 Twin, but that is how it was on my 350 Twin.

my gearhead friend who works at a local bike shop told me to toss the bearings and replace them as the stock bearings wouldn't pass safety these days. I don't really mind dumping $60 for a new set anyhow, but I am wondering if you guys were able to get the stock bearings safetied/

If the steering is smooth with no significant flat spots, they'll safety it (if they bother to even check). Nobody's going to check to see if your bearings are original or not. Just if they work properly.

If you're going to spend money on steering bearings, convert to tapered roller bearings. Simple simple job and no more ball bearings to lose.

If you're looking for just the balls you can get them at www.canadianbearings.com . They sell 100 for about $7. My CB400 needs 1/4 inch size balls and I would imagine the CB450 is similar size. They have all kinds of different sizes and you can probably even get tapered bearings if you bring a set for them to match.

MY FIREND dAVE WHO IS ON HERE SOEMWHERE BOUGHT A TAPERED SET oops for $33.99, that is the way to go. the bb's can be had from honda too.

Thanks for the replies guys. If anyone can confirm where I can get the tapered set that would be great. If not, I guess I'll just order then loose. Can anyone confirm if they're the same size at the CB400's? I don't have anything to measure that small.

Thank you.

I'm sure there are other sources. You should probably be able to find them at www.denniskirk.com but you'll pay more.

Personally when I need bearings, bushes, oil seals, fork seals, water pump seals and other mechanical seals, - I go first to an industrial bearing supply house. Many times, they will stock a suitable replacement at a fraction of the MC dealers price. Usually, a bearing that may cost me $30+ bucks through a motorcycle parts supplier might only cost $7 through the bearing supply house.

Just make sure you are getting the right part, not just the same dimensions. Sight unseen - the supply house may sell you a seal with a steel outer/rubber inner instead of a flexible type, which could fail if the OEM part was plastic/rubber inner/outer.

Look up in your area for a bearing supply house. Best to bring the steering neck with and the old bearing parts. Have them measure them up, and they should be able to get you a suitable tapered replacement set.

They basically will take the inside dimensions, outside dimensions and depth and cross reference against their stocks. I don't remember off hand what the CB450 dimensions are. I usually clean them up and repack them. If I were to build a racer I'd probably go with tapered roller bearings because they provide more surface area than ball bearings and more solid feel.

I know the CB750 has the same steering neck and triple-trees. I recently swapped a set out on a project bike with no problems.

Personally for road use, I have no problem with ball bearings. I find they offer more road-feel without sacrificing any safety, if maintained.

My local bearing house is Berry Bearing Co. They are a national outfit. There is probably one in your area - unless you are far from a major city.

They are allballs bearings... should be good. I have got stuff from CRC also and they are good.
