i have a 1979 cb750kz with comstars and would like to swap them for wire spoked wheels
what wheels are my best options for this swap :-\
i dont mind a bit modifying to make things fit :p

i would also like to drop the front wheel size down from 19" to a 18" would this be ok ?

cheers cooky ;)

18's on both ends is good, but you're going to be into lacing up new wheels altogether I think.

I'd imagine some CB750F wheels would do the trick - you have rear disc brake on that right? Probably get a set of those wheels, and if you're keen on running 18's, you'd need to buy new rims and spokes from somewhere like Buchanan's who will get you the right spokes to mate the hubs and rims.

I'd bet the axle sizes would be the same - might have to space the wheels to center them and make the calipers meet the rotors.

well man it depends on your buget really . you could find a nice set of hubs for a CB then send it to a wheel maker and have them build them with 18s hoops on them . which isnt cheap would say around 500 to 800 bucks ! or order the new parts and build them yourself which would save lil bit of money. you could find a set of CB wheels off a older one ( not a CB guy so dont know years) that has spoke wheels and clean them up . im thinking 76 or 77 had spoke wheels and should just bolt up.

It's the disc rear brake he'll likely need to avoid doing a bunch of work to convert to drum. The 1975 CB750F (SuperSport) had a rear disc while the K bike had the drum. His 1979 CB750KZ has rear disc as well.

Comstars can look good though - might give it some more thought:

Comstars can never look good. They only look less crappy when painted black. Anything painted black can look less crappy. Black is devoid of colour, contrast and contour therefore it hides crappiness.

my rear wheel has a drum brake not disc
im really not fussed on the comstars
i like the retro/classic look

id give lacing a go , i hate paying people to do things when you can possibly do it yourself ;D

im sure there are some "How To .... " here some place ! good luck and let us see how your doin...

i did an 18" front hoop swap on to my 71 cb750k. its all in my build thread...see "reply #30".

Front and back...used 2.5X18 Harley Hoops, Powder coat, new custom buchanan spokes, re-angled the hoops nipple holes to accept the honda hubs...laced, trued...wrapped in 450s front and back...

I don't wanna add it up...but it wasn't cheap...and I'm sure I left something out.

Look for a set of cb500/550 spoked wheels. Their 18", single disk front, drum rear, and the hub/axle size should be relativly close.

You can find them cheap if youre willing to do some cleanup and whatnot.

i have a few sets of cb550 wheels...i would love to trade for those comstars. how close to seattle are you? haha

If you package wheels up nice and tight (I just wrap them in bubble wrap and agarbage bag) shipping isnt bad. Just ship USPS parcel with tracking.

I had my RD wheels ship to me from out west and it really wasnt bad . came in two boxes from the mail dude right to my door . cant remember how much but if it work for both just split the shipping and done deal !

thanks von, well cookymonster if you wanna swap let me know i cant send you some pictures if you need. i would really love those comstars.

One thing I have seen, 1/4" alloy spoke flanges bolted onto Comstars to convert to spoke rims.
It isn't common but it is do-able

I remembered the bike, it was a CX500.
Had to be done that way because of shaft drive rear wheel
