So i've been around here for a short time and very much enjoy seeing what others have build . If its a CB,CL,SR,XS,CM,DT tracker, cafe, bobber,or what ever your building . And i always find myself wondering " Why did they pick that bike to do there build " ? Was it because its a bike they had when they where young or it was what they always wanted or what they could afford etc...?

So my Question is this " Why Did You Pick The Bike You Have "

As for me i didnt pick my bike it kind of picked me . After knowing i wanted to try and build a bike not just going out and buying the newest rocket ship out there. I picked up a CB650 to start ,well i messed with it at first then after reading a few thread it hit me DAM i need to buy 4 of everything on this kind of bike and im not a big Honda lover. So started looking around and talking to a few people and one of my customers told me his bother-in-law had this old Yamaha sitting in his back yard and that it was all there. So about a day later he calls and tells me that the bother-in-law tells him for me to just come and get it i could have it with title and key ! Well long story short it was a 1975 XS500b twin and i just love that lil bike and have been trying to get it back on the road and have some fun with it !

Now im not trying to start any of " MY BIKES BETTER THEN YOUR BIKE " shit just thought it would be kind of cool to see Why You Picked That Bike !
ENJOY !

Well... Almost every bike Ive ever had I picked up because it was so cheap. Ive had a bunch. A couple CB350s, CB500four, RD200, XS650, Suzuki T250, two Ironhead Sportys, etc... Some got built and ridden for a bit, some got tinkered with and traded away, some sat around gathering dust until I got rid of them. Now, I have a nice XS650 chopper, and a T350 (well, Ill have it Sat) cafe project. These bikes are kind of a culmination of what I learned to like/dislike from all of the previous ones and will be staying in my possesion. Theres just something so right about XS650 chops and 2stroke cafes to me. The motors perform in ways that just lend themselves to those styles in my opinion. The XS with its lumpy idle, low end grunt, and classic twin styling scream bare bones chop. And the T350 (or any vintage smoker really) just has that exhaust note, top end power, and raw simplicity that conjure images of mid century road racers far more than their 4stroke counterparts. So, thats why I now have the bikes I do.

I'm a "Do what you can with what you get" kinda guy. No Brand loyalty or visions of grandure, just project bikes that I stumble across.
The GL1100 I got in trade for an old lawn mower a guy at work wanted.
The CB350F I got in trade for the parts bike for the GL I had found for the spare engine.
The GS750 I got offered for Free but paid the guy $20 to keep my Karma on a good note.
The CB450 was DOA and $20 brought it home.
The CB750 I got a hit on Freecycle.org ad I posted for the titled frame and picked up the rest for $50.

Well think i started this thread in the wrong spot ! But then maybe not lol
Please tell us what kind of bike it is and how you got it "Free '"

For me it really depends on what I can find locally that's in my price range. Vintage Japanese bikes are very much a rarity where I live so the pickin's are pretty slim and so you sometimes just have to pick up whatever is available and work with it. I have a lot of bikes that I've love to find but not holding out much hope of ever finding them around here.

I can of buy whatever comes my way on the cheap. That's it. No loyalty to any brand. No rhyme or reason, other than fiscal.

At. This point i have a rd350 that i wanted for a few years and a t500 that i wanted since i was 5, there is also dt that just kinda happened and a gt380 that im restoring.

Yep, I like a good price too. All but one of my bikes that I have bought was bought on the notion that it was a steal.

cb750f - for one $100 bill - even came with a clear title
NT650 - paid $2000 for this one, and it was nice, sold it for $2000 after riding it for 2 years
Nt650 - paid $650 and it cost me $1200 in parts/paint, etc and sold it because I hated it for a loss
nt650 - paid $500
rd350 - free with title, just had to go haul it off
sr500 - for one $100 bill - with title, but frame hacked to pieces - sold parts off and made a bundle
cb360 - paid too much, still have it
cb360 - paid $500 for 2 complete bikes, one with title...

There have been more, but you get the idea
